Katherine Applegate was born in Michigan on July 19, 1956. She writes science fiction, young adult romances, and pop-up books. She is the author of the Making Waves, Making Out, and Roscoe Riley Rules series. She writes the Animorphs, Everworld, and Remnants series under the pen name K. A. toon meer Applegate. She also writes under the pen names of C. Archer, Catherine Kendall and Elizabeth Benning. She has received numerous awards including a Golden Duck Award (Eleanor Cameron Award for Middle Grades) for The Message in 1997, the SCBWI 2008 Golden Kite Award for Best Fiction and the Bank Street 2008 Josette Frank Award for Home of the Brave, and the 2013 Newbery Medal and the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers' Book Award (Illinois) for The One and Only Ivan. - Katherine Applegate is the author of The One and Only Ivan, winner of the 2013 Newbery Medal. Her novel Crenshaw spent over twenty weeks on the New York Times children's bestseller list, and her first middle-grade stand-alone novel, the award-winning Home of the Brave, continues to be included on state reading lists, summer reading lists, and class reading lists.
Katherine has written three picture books: The Buffalo Storm; The Remarkable True Story of Ivan, the Shopping Mall Gorilla (often used as a companion book to The One and Only Ivan for younger readers); and Sometimes You Fly (publishing in spring, 2018). For beginning readers, Katherine wrote Roscoe Riley Rules, a seven-book series.
With her husband, Michael Grant, Katherine co-wrote Animorphs, a long-running series that has sold over 35 million books worldwide.
Katherine lives in Marin County, California, with her family and assorted pets.

3.25 stars. this is a lovely end to the series (and it's good that it's over - to go further we'd have to see julia age, bob die, etc) where we see the continuation of hope, but also of dealing with change and the reality that we can't always give our children something better than what we want. how do we tell them the truth of things like climate change without lying to them but also without ruining their childhood. how do we protect them when what is dangerous is out of our purview? she also, as before, talks about freedom and caging creatures and the "humanity" of all living things. another wonderful book.… (meer)
As gorillas Ivan and Kinyani prepare to be parents, Ivan faces conflicting feelings about the safety of the zoo ("the park") and his memories of the wild. When the twins are born and as they grow, their family is the subject of a documentary, which ultimately becomes the vehicle by which the twins learn of Ivan's past in the roadside mall circus. Elephant Ruby and dog Bob play supporting roles.
Here, there is no dramatic rescue, no violent storm, no tragic backstory that readers don't already know; Ivan may be a gorilla but he is an adult main character, rare in children's fiction, wrestling with adult questions. A fitting end to the quartet.

Previous titles--as I'm sure many know--include The One and Only Ivan, The One and Only Bob, and The One and Only Ruby. Ivan and his gorilla partner, Kinyani, are going to be parents. This book--written in verse--chronicles Ivan's adventures/misadventures as a dad as "Big Daddy."
My thoughts: I LOVED this one. Is it for kids? Maybe. Maybe not. Is it for adults who read children's books? Almost definitely. Perhaps not exclusively. But The One and Only Ivan has been published for over ten years. He is such a memorable character that readers of all ages may want to read this one. The Ivan books (and sequels) have a timeless feel to them. This one gets VERY reflective and philosophical. I think adults will almost definitely connect with the narration. The writing just resonates at times. So many places I ended up highlighting. I am so glad I read this one.

Fängt man an zu lesen, wird man relativ schnell merken, dass sich das Buch eher an ältere Kinder richtet, da manche der Ausführungen doch recht direkt beschrieben werden.
Im Laufe der Handlung begegnet den Lesenden auch immer wieder bekannte Namen, die man aus der Geschichte bzw. Mythologie kennen wird, diese Idee des Paralleluniversums fand ich auch echt gut. Leider konnte mich die Autorin nicht wirklich überzeugen und in die Welt eintauchen lassen.
Das Ende ist sehr offen gehalten, was aber auch nicht verwundert, da es mehrere Bücher der Reihe gibt.
Ein sehr kurzes Jugendbuch, das mich nicht wirklich in die Welt und den Bann ziehen konnte, dass dem ein oder anderen Jugendlichen sicherlich gefallen wird.… (meer)
