This is a good novel from a very talented author, with an excellent grasp of 40k lore and an ability to add immense depth to the characters and situations. however, I found the novel slow at times and the pacing static. The descriptions of the Silver Skulls Space Marine chapter is very well written and gives a real sense of individuality. The protrail of the Red Corsairs is effective and feels too much like 'we're evil just because'. All in all a good read though and I enjoyed.

It's been kind of a mixed bag. Chaos has problems when put in literary form: there's just a lot of incoherence and missing or incomprehensible motives and goals.
Sigvald started out nice, but then dragged on a bit.
Valkia right next was too much of the same.
The short stories were nice timefillers.
van Horstmann was easily the best, with some nice surprises and a coherent story.

READ IN ENGLISH

Read all my reviews on http://urlphantomhive.booklikes.com

I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, thank you!

Both the title and the story suggest this is going to be the first book in a new series.

This book starts as an alternate history in which 'The Demon King' (Richard III; How dare they!) wins the battle of Bosworth against Henry Tudor, but only because he has made a pact with demon Melusine. Richard III and future kings -who are conveniently also called Richard- are forced to destroy magic in Britain, first brought back to England by Richard Lionheart, leading to an Inquisition trying to exterminate it (while also using some kind of magic, which is plain hypocrite!)

Besides this alternate history the story is a traditional fantasy, with a young man and woman embarking on an adventure they didn't ask for (nor do they completely know WHAT it is they are looking for/trying to do). With, naturally, the help of some older mentor, after a father-figure dies. Unfortunately, no dragons...

Exactly what the uprising in this book is the title refers to, I'm not sure. In the beginning of the story, there are some 'history lessons' between the chapters to allow readers to learn something on the alternate history without characters having some kind of forced conversation. I really liked the combination between the alternate England and traditional fantasy, although I had liked to see some more England (as they really travel all across Europe in this book). Most of the characters however did not really come to life for me, I didn't feel connected to any of them, really. It was however still an enjoyable read, and I'm planning on reading the second book in this series, will it arrive...

Heirs of the Demon King: Uprising by Sarah Cawkwell

Quite a good fantasy novel

An enjoyable read, this first novel deals with a world torn between using magic or banning it. Richard the Lionheart brings magic back to England on his return from the Crusades and it flourishes until the reign of Richard III who defeats Henry Tudor at Bosworth Field, changing history.

His descendant, Richard V, is out to persecute magicians and ban magic from England, using his Inquisition to carry out his plans.

The books deals with how the more powerful magicians and the two main characters, Mathias and Tagan, get together to defeat the king.

The novel is quite engaging and the reader is involved enough to want to know how the story will end. It works as a stand-alone book although there may be others to follow. The characters are well- developed and the locations are made interesting.

All in all, I was suitably impressed to want to know if the author comes up with a follow-up.
