D(avid) H(erbert) Lawrence was born on September 11, 1885. His father was a coal miner and Lawrence grew up in a mining town in England. He always hated the mines, however, and frequently used them in his writing to represent both darkness and industrialism, which he despised because he felt it was toon meer scarring the English countryside. Lawrence attended high school and college in Nottingham and, after graduation, became a school teacher in Croyden in 1908. Although his first two novels had been unsuccessful, he turned to writing full time when a serious illness forced him to stop teaching. Lawrence spent much of his adult life abroad in Europe, particularly Italy, where he wrote some of his most significant and most controversial novels, including Sons and Lovers and Lady Chatterly's Lover. Lawrence and his wife, Frieda, who had left her first husband and her children to live with him, spent several years touring Europe and also lived in New Mexico for a time. Lawrence had been a frail child, and he suffered much of his life from tuberculosis. Eventually, he retired to a sanitorium in Nice, France. He died in France in 1930, at age 44. In his relatively short life, he produced more than 50 volumes of short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel journals, and letters, in addition to the novels for which he is best known. Als je dit boek in 2021 leest, bijna een eeuw nadat het boek is geschreven, lijkt er op sommige punten nog niet zoveel veranderd: vrouwen worstelen nog steeds met hun seksualiteit, mannen nemen die dikwijls "for granted". Dat Clifford zich geen moment afvraagt wat het voor zijn vrouw betekent dat hij vanaf zijn middel verlamd uit de oorlog is teruggekomen, spreekt ook al boekdelen. En dan het verschil in maatschappelijke klasse. Is daar echt al veel in veranderd? Kortom, een "oud" boek over zaken die nog steeds spelen.… (meer)
Het verhaal gaat over de seksulateit tussen man en vrouw. Het verhaal heeft op zich een logische opbouw, de vrouw wordt in de armen van een andere man gedreven doordat haar eigen man van onderen verlamd is. Helaas is het taalgebruik niet altijd fraai. Bovendien is de voorspelbaarheid groot. Al na de eerste ontmoeting tussen Connie en Olivier weet je dat ze een verhouding zullen krijgen. Daardoor lijkt het af en toe op een kasteelromannetje. Ook de personages blijven vlak, Clifford gedraagt zih altijd zoals het moet, zijn reacties zijn erg voorspelbaar en een-dimensionaal. Gelukkig wordt gaandeweg de verhouding tussen Connie en Olivier van wat meer diepgang voorzien. Hoewel D.H.Lawrence in zijn nawoord alleen over seksualiteit praat, ziet er naar mijn idee ook een "socialisteische" component is: de upper-calss gaat niet om met het werkersvolk. En het werkersvolk laat zich te gemakkelijk onderdrukken. De liefde tussen Connie en Oliver wordt dan ook belemmerd door het stand verschil.… (meer)
