- Amy Stewart is the author of seven books. Her latest, Girl Waits With Gun, is a novel based on a true story. She has also written six nonfiction books on the perils and pleasures of the natural world, including four New York Times bestsellers: The Drunken Botanist, Wicked Bugs, Wicked Plants, and Flower Confidential. She lives in Eureka, California, with her husband Scott Brown, who is a rare book dealer. They own a bookstore called Eureka Books.

Girl waits with gun door Amy Stewart
This is strongly based on a true historical figure. I feel it would have changed my expectations and approach to the book if I had known that going in. I might have enjoyed it more. As it was I judged it against the plots and pace of classic hard-boiled novels (maybe because of the cover). This is not that.
The author provides a pretty extensive list of plants that are bad players. The descriptions are interesting and the illustrations are well done. I enjoyed reading the book and learned about many plants that I did not know much about. The information would be helpful to avoid injury or death. It is interesting that the plants have developed the methods for protection and other benefits.
I really enjoyed this. I picked it up because the next novel in the series was on sale, and surely I can't start with the second book, so I checked this one out from the library. The characters are well drawn and interesting, and the story moves along at a good pace. Great fun!
I'm not much of a drinker, but was tempted to buy everything described. Lots of recipes and fascinating facts about plants and alcohol
