- Dorothy Van Doren, née Graffe, was the author of four novels, including Those First Affections (1938). Her other books included the autobiographical The Country Wife (1950) about marriage, motherhood, and life as an amateur farmer in Connecticut, and The Professor and I (1959), on life with her husband Mark Van Doren, the poet. She also worked for many years as an editor for The Nation. During World War II, she ran the British desk at the Office of War Information, which later became the Voice of America.
