I picked up this book because I just began teaching at the 9th grade building of T.C. Williams High School. When I ventured into the big school’s foyer, I noted that there were still posters from Remember the Titans set up in the entrance, and that many pieces of memorabilia from that season grace the display cases. In reading the book, however, I hoped that it would tell more about the real Yoast’s perspective during the time the movie made famous- the real inside scoop, so to speak, about desegregation in Alexandria, the other coaches and players, any stories the movie did not tell or glossed over (or did tell, but wrongly). However, the focus real is much more on the lessons Yoast learned- his thoughts on perseverance, loyalty, determination, failure, etc. That was a bit too dry and preachy for me . . . yes, determination is good, but not enough zest to make for an interesting work.… (meer)
