Not all fairy tales have happy endings.

Belle Gunness was in for a hard life from the start. Born the first of many children to an impoverished family in rural Norway, her days were filled with abuse, grueling labor, and little hope for anything else. So when her sister offered to bring her to America, that golden land of opportunity, it's no surprise that she jumped at the chance to finally live a better life.

The next years are no easier, but eventually, she finds herself with everything she ever wanted: a husband, a home, beautiful children, and most importantly, money. Then her husband, Mads, dies a sudden and mysterious death, leaving her with a generous life insurance policy. When Belle remarries, everyone sees it as a testament to her endurance. But then her next husband dies, as do a countless number of suitors who follow.

Is Belle just unlucky in love? Or is there something far more sinister happening behind the closed doors of the widow's homestead.
