Over mijzelfI am eclectic in my tastes; frequently over-committed in my scheduled things to do, see, and have; constantly wishing for more books and for more time to read them; suffer from free floating desires for more...more beauty in my life; more time with friends; more happiness (typical American fantasy).

Over mijn boekenMy library is filled with "to be read" books, books that have helped me solve problems or do things (gardening, raising dogs, retiring, spending money); references; history; many more interests. I am a bit of a peripatetic reader.

Hope to see you soon!
Thank you for your comment regarding the Kindle, Karen. I do want to invest into a Kindle. Money's tight now so it may not be an option for the next few months. Your's and other illumination has spurred my interest even more. I do miss reading as much as I used to.

I end up doing a lot of work on the PC. Unfortunately much of the video editing I do requires a lot of desktop space, thus making me choose smaller resolutions to fit the program and necessary toolbars. Things be gettin' blurry.

Anyway. I appreciate the time to respond personally to me. I took a few days off of the 'interwebs' so I didn't see your post until not.

Kindest regards,

Bob
Depends on whether I can figure out a way to get there. I have neither a driver's license or car of my own, so I'm rather relient on friends and others (including my own two feet and public transit) to get from point A to point B.
I'm hoping to be able to be at the meetup. It is rather difficult to plan ahead but being on a weekend in Portland will help. I'm watching the thread for the details to get finalized and then I will do my best to be there. Carol
Ah crap. My calendar reminder didn't snooze correctly. Sorry, hon!
Hey Karen - Aperture 3 (the latest version) is post-shoot cataloguing and editing software created by Apple for use on their computers. It can do some of the things that Photoshop can do, although it's really meant for organising big libraries of pictures (you can tag / rate / add notes to them in the same way you can tag books here on LT) as well as traditional editing (dodge, burn, brightness, sharpening, and more). I still use photoshop extensively (let me know how your course goes, and if there's anything I can help with? Though I'm by no means an expert) but Aperture allows me to sort through my pictures in a much more detailed way than I had previously been able to do (and its exactly the sort of thing I've been looking for). There is a similar piece of software, made by the people behind Photoshop, called Lightroom.
Maggie (Karen), I just wanted to stop by and apologize for the misunderstanding in the weather thread. As I said there in my last message, I'd intended to egg you into a virtual pillow fight, not create a problem. My very real apologies.
Jill (jillmwo)
Hi Maggie! *hugs*

Yes I know your real name isn't Maggie, but hey after our chat in the GD chat room I'm carrying on calling you Maggie anyways. :)

I wanted to apologize about my abrupt departure on Friday in the chat room, sometimes when the phone rings it kicks me off the internet. *sad face* I was having an absolutely marvelous time talking with you! So nice to "meet" you and I hope that we will have many more chats in the future! :D

I added you to my interesting list, I was in fact shocked you weren't already on it, to be sure. You have such a fantastic collection... AND you live near Seattle!!! *gasp* I really don't recall anyone else I could be more jealous of atm. :P

In any case, much love and I hope you had a fantastic weekend.

Hi Karen, How is the book buying in Washington? I hear it can be amazing. Russ
Groucho was the original insult comic! Remember how mean he was to Margaret Dumont? I loved watching You Bet Your Life, too.
Hey, thanks for the tip. Have you read any of Groucho's books?
Hope Greta is doing well.
*massive hugs*

I am sorry, it was the only Maggie I could find.
There is one more thing you can try, sometimes a thread is "stuck" between two pages. If you reply to one of the threads on the last page, these shoud go to the top of page 2 and 3.

Hi!
It's good to know that others understand. I've only taught 10 years after spending 18 in banking. The first few years, I really enjoyed being a teacher, then No Child Left Behind came along, followed by a population shift in my community. It's amazing how much has changed in the past 10 years! I am not free at all to teach what I feel I need to. We must all be doing the same thing at the same time, and we are teaching to the test. Our administration doesn't even try to hide that fact anymore. There's no room for creativity, either on my part or the kids. It's all about the numbers.

Enough of that! I am pursuing a 2nd masters in library and information science, so I am doing something positive to get out of the classroom. I want to be an academic or research librarian in a college or university, if anyone will hire a 50-year old, inexperienced librarian! I'm enjoying the classes immensely. I wish someone had suggested this field a long time ago!

Take care!
Beth
Hi Karen - taking me awhile to catch up with notes and such. Thanks for your note. Isn't retirement the best!?

I've had several meetups with some LT folks too, one on the east coast! I'd be interested in participating in a meetup but doubt I'll have time to help organize much for the next six months or so. I have some travels and big events coming up this year and a limited amount of energy! But do keep me in the loop if such a thing evolves. I know of a couple of other Portland LTers who'd be interested.

Be well, happy reading!
Terri
Hi Karen,
I'm delighted to have a new follower for my blog and a new friend! I've followed you, too... I go through fits and starts with mine - but I do try to add my books as I read them, if nothing else. I figure that way I'll at least have something going onto it. At the moment I'm madly catching up on LT threads and studiously avoiding the papers I have due for classes next week. Oh, dear...

Happy New Year!
LOL.. just read your introduction in the 75 challenge, Oh how I know the time-sucking effects of those darn facebook games! Good luck with your reading this coming year!
Oh, and the origin of the name - my family had a sailboat when I was a teenager and since my mother was French, she wanted to name it Mademoiselle. Since you pay by the letter to have a name painted on the boat and no one would be able to pronounce it, we shortened and spelled it phonetically as Mamzel. I like it as a screen name since it reflects my heritage.
What a delightful story about your Peace Corps time. I'm glad it was a happy memory I gave you. I had a laugh last night watching reruns of Absolutely Fabulous. The three main characters, Saphy, Edina, and Patsy went to Morocco. If you are not familiar with the series, Patsy is rail thin, uses any and all drugs, drinks like a fish, and works in a fashion magazine in London. Every time someone addressed her as Madame she corrected them saying it was Mad-em-moi-selle!

Thanks Maggie! I saw your post in the GD first, I *think* I managed to follow you on blogger, I'm uploading some pics to flickr right now so my computer is s-l-o-w but as soon as I can I'll check!

:)

Cara
Yay! Found it! You did it! *round of applause*
Karen,
I'm so glad you liked the books! You said you liked paper crafts, but not scrap booking in your profile. I immediately thought of origami. And I had a feeling you'd like the new Gaiman book.

BTW - finished Bridge of Sighs today. Can hardly wait to discuss it next week.

Merry Christmas! Jan
Hi Karen,
I just finished reading Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom, I think you would enjoy this book. It is a very human story, has a lot of good humor, and a message of tolerance and respect. It is an easy read, small book with lots of short chapters. If you decide to read it I would be interested in hearing what you think.

Carol
Hi Maggie! Thank you so much for the Santa Thing books! They're perfect. Have a great holiday! - N & L
I'm curious to know what you think of Ken Wilber and his work? I find the man himself rather disagreeable, but its obvious he has an amazing brain in his head and he uses it quite effectively in his writing. His books have been one of the greatest influences on my worldview, even if I'm not remotely as well read in psychology and some other subjects as he is.
I'm glad it arrived on time, I don't blame you for not sending them out. I said that we weren't sending any last year and then it was "but we have to send one to so-and-so" and then "well they sent us one, we ought to send one back" and "so-and-so noticed that you sent one to someone else but not to them" and before we knew it, we had sent lots.

I hope you have fun with your family. Their little ones are just the right age aren't they? I think this year we will be more excited than Joseph, who really doesn't know what all the fuss is for. He's having a lot of fun right now with a musical gingerbread house.
I did go to the doctors and have been given a one-off prescription for an inhaler to help if that happens again.

The good news is that the doctor thinks it was just an odd thing that happened and it shouldn't happen again. And that if it does I will probably pass out, relax and breathe before I die. That second part is not so comforting but I'm hoping the first part is true and it won't happen again. I have to try to remember to breath through my nose if it happens until I can use the inhaler. I think I panicked before and tried to gasp in some air through my mouth.

It's not something that ever happened to me before and I didn't even cough very hard so it remains a bit of a mystery.

It's nice that everyone is so concerned though, thank you. I hope you are well too. Did your christmas card arrive yet?
I apologize if I came across as rude. Us Noo Yawkuhs forget there is an entire world out there besides us.
lol! I'm just glad it worked at last :-)
Glad to hear you didn't get the wind we did, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

I'm checking my email, nothing yet, but I'll keep checking.

love Katherine :-)
Hi,
I've not spent a lot of time logging on to LT of recent months but I've just glanced at my comments and noticed your query about Image Venue. Just thought I'd mention it is no longer a site I'd recommend or use. Photobucket is the one I now use.

Hi Karen, sorry about not answering you sooner, I've been away. The bug on my porch is a bumble bee. But Hugh is right, it does look like a cootie from that old game doesn't it? lol! You can tell them it's on my porch too, if you want, I certainly don't mind.

Hope you're well. I'm fine, had a wonderful time in Ottawa, had to buy a bigger suitcase 'cause Mark took me on a "book day" and Ottawa has some lovely bookstores, new and used stores and I needed a biggers suitcase to bring home my finds! Lovely :-) It was a wrench leaving him though, but Pippin was over-the-moon happy to see me.

Take care, give your poochies a scratch and pat for me :-)

always, Katherine
How about now?
I just won't be able to go anywhere this year as i had to move in June & am still trying to get all of my belongings settled. The whole thing has cost me quite a bit of time as well as money. I am having to divest myself of a lot of stuff which just have no room for since i was moving from the house i was sharing w/my daughter & her family into an apartment. I would love to make to a meet up eventually but it just can't be this year. I am even having to send some of my books off to new homes as my shelf space is limited. I'm donating many of them to the same fundraising book sale where i bought them over the past 30 years. That is my book recycling plan! Thank you for asking tho & i am thinking about next year's meetup which i think they said may be in Portland where my favorite bookstore, Powell's, is located. If you've never been to Powell's you should consider it too! Thanx again & i hope you all have a great time & maybe think about me for a minute or two! LOL 8^)
Hi Karen, Maggie....How old are your nieces? Can I send you a couple of Math books to entertain them with? Mine are about a gr. 2 level, suitable for 5-9 yr. olds, with titles like Miss Messier's Mess, Fly Spy, The Uncertain Princess.
Lorraine from West Kelowna
Hi Karen, looks like we'll be a small group at the meet-up, but it'll be fun to see you! Not too long now. Sure glad you're coming :-)

See you soon,
Katherine
Maggie, I saw your note at one of the groups about wanting to write a letter to young people in your family. I've started a blog to encourage people to write letters and I sometimes post them. There are 13 examples up right now about writing and literary topics. Since you obviously love books, I'd recommend that you try writing a letter about one of your favorite books. That would be an indirect way of giving advice. :-)

The site is here if you are interested: http://theletterproject.wordpress.com/
Oh crap..I haven't been around lately and it totally slipped my mind!

I'll pick it up from here :)
According to the birthday thread, here's the list of volunteers:

August - Severn
September - LizT
October - MrsLee
November - Clamairy
December - Jadesbook

Anybody remind Severn?
Hi Maggie,
I noticed you have my book, We're All Artists: Watercolor for Everyone on your list - great. Are you a watercolorist?

Teresa Ascone
I Thought It Was Just Me by Brene Brown
It's not looking good Maggie. Many things have changed the last few months. Biggest is my niece and her family - including my crippled brother (late stage MS) - moved to Sacramento last month. I need to get down there and check on things but I start school 9/22 so the 1st couple weeks of September are probably going to be in Cali. Sorry, I was looking forward to the meetup.
Hi Karen, hope you have a great time in Victoria. Sorry I can't make it down to visit with you this time, but I'll see you in September :-)
Maggie, where were you posted in the Peace Corps? My younger daughter got back about a year ago from a stint in Ghana.
Congratulations!! W00T! Your new-to-you house sounds absolutely wonderful! (I love exclamation marks!) :-D I'm grinning ear to ear for you - see? :-D The pictures on the realtor's link look great too. I'm so happy for you Karen, what wonderful news! I'm sure there's lots of room for bookcases too right? Congratulations again.

Woo Hoo! We're going to Victoria...we're going to Victoria!!
Be there or be square!
Sounds like a plan, my comp froze up on me and I just wasn't in the mood to do a re-start, icky computer!
Can I put you on my friends list?
This seems a better place to get into nonthread chitchat I guess calmy is OK, but on the whole calmly might be more descriptive. I'm pretty laid back most of the time.
I plan on being at 3rd Place early and eating dinner there. You too?

I started reading this month's book but it seems to only hold my interest for a few pages at a time so it is pretty slow going for me. I'm still very early in the book but so far haven't seen any thing that if I had spent any time thinking about that I wouldn't have figured out for myself...I don't mean to sound like a know-it-all, it just hasn't had any 'aha!' moments for me yet.
Thanks! I'll look into the guides.
Hey there...I was just talking about you over on this thread:
