Over mijzelfI am the founder and lead developer of LibraryThing.
Over mijn boekenMy interests run to ancient history, Greek and Latin. So far I've done maybe 1/4-1/3 of what I have. Frankly, it's also gotten a bit mixed-up and redundant, as I use this account for testing. (There are a couple books I test out with, because I know they have certain fields or are in certain libraries.) That said, I've got a good chunk of my history, religion and archaeology in. Greek, Latin and novels to come....

Thanks for your help. My books all seem to be there today.
Amongst your difficulties must be data validation of user enterable data and removal of duplicates.
When I enter a book, I try to put on the correct cover. In some cases there are identical pictures of the same cover (sometimes in different resolutions), which probably adds an unnecessary load to your system.
I have mainly just been following my nose and trying what seems to the obvious way of doing things, which generally has worked - you may take that as a large compliment.
But (small but), a couple of comments/ideas:
a) I am sometimes unclear on whether I am dealing with a work, a book or a book instance - for example when I add a book(-instance), and it loads with the title almost all in lower case, I normally change it to 'Title Case' (generally copying the title page of the book). In your database, does this change the title for the work, for the book or for my copy of the book?
b) When adding 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' (Minster Classics, no ISBN), it (British Library) listed 133 results. What is the sort order for add-search results? If it were sorted by (a) title, (b) publication data and (c) publisher (or a,c,b) then it might be easier to find the particular copy I have in front of me.
c) I am now trying to add "Way-Farer" by Dennis Schmidt (ACE SF 1978). When I search, I does not find it, but it does show "Kensho by Dennis A. Schmidt". So I added that and in the same series is "Way-Farer". When I add it, I find that the book I have just added is "The War Lords by A. G. Gardiner" This seems like some sort of referential integrity or data problem.
Hope this is helpful, Chris

Cute pictures...love the color of the library!
I'm not sure if you know about this so I thought I woud bring it to your attention.
One reader wrote "When I went to send reminders of our next group read in the Missouri Readers Group, the only names listed were those of the most recent members. So if any of you are part of the group and didn't get a message from me:
Reminder: The Missouri Readers Group will begin discussion of King of the Hill: A Memoir by A. E. Hotchner on April 1, 2010. No Kidding! The discussion thread is at http://www.librarything.com/topic/87112.
I replied:
I had the same problem for the President's Challenge and was told that Group zeitgeist is currently disabled. Once it comes back, that'll solve your problem."
I'm not sure I understand how that works but I'm hoping that it will be corrected soon. However, when I asked how soon that would be, I was told "I wouldn't hold my breath."
For some us that have created a group, we use that list of group members and could really appreciate it if that functionality was returned. Who should we contact to keep track of the progress?
Thanks. Cheli

Could you please redo my LT indexes too, so I can search my library for both the ISBN-10 and ISBN-13?
Thanks a lot in advance

Subject: ISBN 10 VS ISBN 13

«But he wants to be able to search his library on either format and find a number in the other format. Could you do that?
Ah, okay. Now I'm getting it. Sorry, I was being thick.
Okay, try now. The indexed version of your records now include both the ISBN10 and ISBN13 versions. (To be technical it stores what you have, the ISBN10 and the ISBN13, which might be three versions if you added dashes.) So you can search on the ISBN13 even if your record has the ISBN10. So, basically we're storing a second version, but only for indexing purposes. We do this for authors too (last first, first last, etc.) It's helpful.
I redid all the indexes of people who spoke up here. I'm not going to clear all other users' indexes now. That would be quite an act of destruction and a lot of work to rebuild, so they'll have to fade out as necessary.
Apologies for not understanding this.»
