Baker and Michael O’Malley have opened quite a couple of new perspectives on leadership. While many leadership books concentrate on leading by example, leadership traits, the nature or nurture debate, Leading with Kindness is the first one to value kindness, not coincidental a part of the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). Fruits of the flesh, also described in Paul’s letter to the Galatians, brought us greed and corporate callousness, the kind of leaders that caused the current economic crisis.
The authors define kindness through a series of traits like compassion, integrity, gratefulness, credibility, humor, humility and authenticity. Reading along the examples, do’s and dont’s one drifts away from kindness alone. Parallels with parenting and family life got lots of attention. And so you learn (again) about active listening, job satisfaction, motivators en 360-degrees leadership. Leadership and management are used as interchangeable, only slightly different concepts. I was positively surprised by the amount of other examples than the companies found in “the” other management literature.
You get chances to enrich your leadership abilities to:
motivate employees, committee members, and others
recognize unique talents while nurturing all employees
establish a supportive environment
spur continuous organizational growth
adapt to change
stimulate calculated “stretch” and risk-taking
prepare the next generation of leaders
The book was praised as one of the best leadership books of 2008. I listened to the audio book edition, which was read aloud with a pleasant pace and voice."
AMACOM (2008), Hardcover, 256 pagina's

globalization: n. the irrational fear that someone in China will take your job door Bruce C. Greenwald (who teaches in Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business) and Judd Kahn (a former history professor) proof globalists to be dead wrong in Glob•ali•za´•tion: n. The Irrational Fear that Someone in China Will Take Your Job. While we’re supposed to live in the Globalization 3.0 world according to Thomas L. Friedman c.s. the net effects of factors related to globalization seem absent. Necessary are good statistics (remember the lies, damned lies & statistics quotes?), and better research than mere anecdotes and unrelated data or non-correlations.
Local factors, better: local choices are much powerful than global factors or globalization as single entity. For example, the so called BRIC countries perform much better nowadays under same global conditions. Other factors need to be uncovered. Many sectors like healthcare, education, social arrangements, government, food distribution, services have a local focus: products & services are made, offered and consumed locally. Energy, telecommunication, utilities are all delivered locally too.
Globalists exaggerate their influence, while anti-globalists, present at top meetings to demonstrate, may have other concerns than pure economics. The authors present a 4 years economics graduate level education in 1 book. I was happy to be familiar with all factors researched (e.g. wages, profitability, economies of scale, barriers & tarriffs, competitive advantages, global branding, information asymmetry, moral hazard, Marshall Plan, Bretton Woods, Gold Standard, investments, savings, currency exchange rates, productivity measurements, IMF and World Bank).
Written in 2008 at the dawn of the current economic crisis, the authors draw many lessons from the past centuries, rather than trusting news networks anchormen or latest hypes. In the final chapter they finally leave the field of economics and pay attention to other global problems like the environmental change, terror and diseases.
I used the 5-disc (6+ hours) audio book edition of the book to absorb its message to many of us working in services oriented (local) economies: have no fear that someone in China will take your job."
Wiley (2010), Editie: 1, Paperback, 186 pagina's

Full Engagement!: Inspire, Motivate, and Bring Out the Best in Your People door Brian Tracy

hjvanderklis's review: "In these tough economic times, you’re expected to produce more with less. And when research shows that employees are working at 50% of their potential, there’s a lot to win for managers. Enter Full Engagement!: Inspire, Motivate, and Bring Out the Best in Your People. Brian Tracy, Chairman and CEO of Brian Tracy International, a company specializing in the training and development of individuals and organizations, brings together a lot of economic, psychological, pedagogical. business and religious principles to encourage managers to inspire, motivate and bring out the best in their people. From Frederick Taylor‘s scientific management, Maslow’s needs hierarchy, the irrational decision making of humans to outspoken lessons in self-esteem. People’s personalities don’t change. Room for change should be found in natural abilities, talents and competences. The starting point is learning why and how people think and act the way they do. From there, a manager will understand how to get full engagement.
Tracy elaborates on the necessary vision and motivators, and being a living example of everything you preach. The best companies have the best managers. As a result, the best companies have the best people, and that means people who consistently outthink, outcompete, and outperform their competitors. The true measure of the value of any business leader and manager is performance. Therefore hire the right people at the right time. Drive out fear. Foster talents and responsibility, self-esteem and self-organization. Establish SMART goals, delegate as much as possible, without reverse delegation. Listen actively, learn from Montessori education, and so on.
The book contains lots of exercises, practical hints and tips, best practices from both Tracy’s professional and private life. Examples are 25 ways to create a peak performance / happy work, 4 ways to change, 3 essentials of a peak performance workplace, 4 keys to effective listening, and 17 greatest management principles ever discovered."
AMACOM (2011), Hardcover, 240 pagina's

The Little Red Book of Wisdom door Mark DeMoss

Thomas Nelson (2011), Editie: Revised, Hardcover, 208 pagina's

Sturen op projectsucces voor en door projectmanagers door Fred J. Not my everyday subject (thank God!), but after reading and reviewing The Origins of Sex, this novel is an example of the double moral standard in effect in the USA and other western countries as well. Human trafficking, drug addiction, sexual offenders and child molestation are forbidden. And yet, there's a huge market for drugs and sex related services and products. Some 30% of all internet traffic is porn content.
Martin portrays the life of working porn stars in the Adult Film Industry, based on researched sources and interviews, but packaged as fiction. The storyline is about ex-porn star and cutthroat businesswoman Julia Giovanni and her husband Boyd. While Julia wants to build her their Giovanni Films into a beyond-average, on-demand adult movie company, with strict rules on acting for competitors and hygiene. Boyd enjoys the luxury, and is tired of looking after his brother Peter who's a drug addict trying to rehab.
Lillian Cardinal tries to leave her job as stripper and become a star in Giovanni Films productions. She's also children to take care of. Her entry into a first porn production becomes a tragedy with some hilarious moments. These main characters are developed throughout the book, with several other storylines and characters woven into it. Meet Wanda and her brother Warren that eventually rapes her sister and steals her virginity. Meet Brandy and little Tito that's lost her real mother. Peter Giovanni ultimate solution: a Glock 9mm. Young drug addicts Ronnie and Jerome, even younger actor Justin and has-been actor Malcolm. The tragic end of the company illustrates the fine line between on-demand business and the long arm of the DA.
Though a lot of dialogues in the book have a vocabulary like : "By a fucking monkey. Who cares? Bottom line, you're out of a goddamn job and back on the street, running a couple hoes for cash." nothing attractive remains about the porn industry or drug addiction. Family life and marriage are destroyed, distinction between love and mere lust is gone, real life and fake or acting blurred. And yes, everyone is entitled to formulate his/her opinion. Lynne Martin lets her character conclude: "Because sometimes our personal lives are much too painful when they're exposed to the light of day. What seems normal, or maybe even acceptable to us, may appear seedy or possibly evil in the eyes of many others. People don't always understand the choices we've made, or the secrets we've been forced to keep. They're too... critical. They're too..." she searched for another word, 'judgmental.'" (p.222)
Not every desire should be captured on film. In my opinion a better quote than several others serving a chapter's introduction. Lynne Martin is an advocate of women's rights and a staunch supporter of sexual education. She currently resides in Alberta, Canada, with her husband and their large extended family."
iUniverse (2012), Paperback, 412 pagina's

The Ultimate Comprehensive Bible Timeline door Jonathan Hall

Due Time Publishing (2012), Kindle Edition

The Heritage door Johnny Ray

Sir John Publishing (2011), Editie: #1, Kindle Edition, 191 pagina's

Popologetics: Popular Culture in Christian Perspective door Ted Turnau

P & R Publishing (2012), Paperback, 368 pagina's

Kill the Company: End the Status Quo, Start an Innovation Revolution door Lisa Bodell

Bibliomotion (2012), Hardcover, 256 pagina's

Positive Intelligence: Why Only 20% of Teams and Individuals Achieve Their True Potential AND HOW YOU CAN ACHIEVE YOURS door Shirzad Chamine

Greenleaf Book Group Press (2012), Hardcover, 224 pagina's

Good Thinking: Seven Powerful Ideas That Influence the Way We Think door Denise Cummins

Cambridge University Press (2012), Editie: 1, Paperback, 216 pagina's

A Shot of Faith (to the Head): Be a Confident Believer in an Age of Cranky Atheists door Mitch Stokes

hjvanderklis's review: "Dr. Stokes received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Florida in 1992 and an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Central Florida in 1994. While serving as an advanced and senior engineer in Florida in the 1990s, Dr. Stokes took theological courses at Reformed Theological Seminary in Orlando. He went on to complete an M.A. in Religion (Philosophy of Religion) at Yale University under Dr. Nick Wolterstorff in 2001 and an M.A. in Philosophy at University of Notre Dame in 2003. He completed his doctoral studies in Philosophy at Notre Dame under Dr.Alvin Plantinga and Dr. Peter van Inwagen in 2005, prior to joining the New Saint Andrews faculty. It’s Plantinga that inspired this great shot of apologetics.
In A Shot of Faith of Faith to the Head, subtitled Be a Confident Believer in an Age of Cranky Atheists, Mitch Stokes dismantles the (well known) claims of skeptics and atheists, while remaining a simple yet solid case for the Christian belief.
In part 1 the claim “Belief in God is irrational” is researched. What is evidence? Does evidence itself need evidence? Is it enough to take God for granted, or can His existence be proven? Stokes does some fine work in addressing rationality, logic and constructing arguments to prove something. Outspoken atheists insist that faith is naïve and belief is dangerous. Neither Christians and atheists simply trust the evidence, but have to accept certain facts as ‘basic beliefs.’
To come to the conclusion that the atheists are the irrational ones, the author takes a long journey along the ideas of Plato, Aristotle, Galileo, Newton, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, and Daniel Dennett. Is the division between rational and irrational indeed translated correctly as the war between science and religion, ratio and faith? No, it’s impossible to only believe what we have personal evidence for. We really do take a lot for granted, without any doubt. Then why wouldn’t we accept God, His existence and design of the universe?
In Part 2 and 3 Stokes dismantles two main objections from atheists: science (and scientific proof) and the existence evil (“If God exists, why is there evil and suffering?”). Earth and all of us on this planet (and the rest of the universe as well) can’t exist based on coincidence or evolution alone. From many sources design can be concluded. Evil exists and only makes sense for a human that’s free to choose between good and bad. There’s no evolutionary or atheist answer to this phenomenon, accoring to Stokes.
The book isn’t an easy one to read at all times. I preferred reading a couple of chapters, put the book away, absorb its message, and resume another day. Whether you agree or disagree upon first reading, this book has certainly food for thought and inspiration for the faithful. Each chapter closes with input for your arsenal, conclusions and main tenets. Remember: we’re all damaged goods and need (godly) repair. May this book help you."
Thomas Nelson (2012), Paperback, 272 pagina's

A Spirituality of Living: The Henri Nouwen Spirituality Series door Henri J. Ray Quinn is assisted by Crevis, who had a bad childhood and currently is studying for a written test for the police academy. Because he is dyslectic and had little education when he was a child, it is hard on him. He is grateful for the help of Pam Winters, the sister of the victim in Night Watchman (The Corruptible is a sequel to The Night Watchman), and meanwhile a good friend of both Quinn as Crevis. He is still recovering from a shooting 18 months ago, which made an end to his police career, and killed the love of his life who was also his police partner. Unfortunately, sometimes Ray thinks that Jim Beam is a fine medicine.
Quinn is called in on a case of corporate espionage. The accused employee is an old colleague of Ray, back in his police days. Due to undercover work, Logan becomes an alcohol addict en after solving his under cover job, he messes up at a drug deal. After that, he is fired and becomes a security officer at a financial corporation.
Of course, not everything is what it seems. The outcome is quite unexpected, and even more cases than expected are solved. The book is well written and a pleasure to read. Even hard to lay aside, when gripped by the story. Some detective stories are reasonably predictable, but not this one. I can surely recommend it and look forward to read another story by Mark Mynheir."
Multnomah Books (2011), Editie: First Edition, Paperback, 352 pagina's
