The book tracks the astounding and character-forming adventures of Heathcliff during the three years he was absent from Wuthering Heights. He left as a beaten-down, penniless stable boy and returned as a rich and ruthless gentleman. How he did it is not explained in Emily Bronte's book.
Haunted by his obsessive love, his odyssey takes him to 18th century Liverpool, on a slave ship to Africa and Jamaica, and after many adventures to London where he meets the beautiful French pickpocket who offers him a risky opportunity to change his life.
