Snow Days Check In

Just checking up on how everyone is doing in the US snow storm. I'm just south of St. Louis MO, and my school is currently on Day 7.5 Snow Days. It's currently 12 degrees F., and we have about 7" of snow. We have electricity and water, plenty of food and no immediate need to get outside. Major streets are currently clear, and Mr.Exiled has shoveled the walkway twice this morning. Currently snowing again. I've checked with my children who still live in Texas. My son in Dallas is fine; his house is on the same grid as the nearby hospital, so he doesn't expect to lose electricity. My daughter is in Ft. Worth, and they've had rolling blackouts since Sunday night.

All the major stuff went south of us (northern Wisconsin), but we've been in a two week cold snap with overnight temps well below zero. The days are now creeping back up to the teens and twenties, so it's back to normal. No issues with power or snow. Sucks for the lower part of the country where they have no way to deal with the weather we have up here.

We are a little north of Buffalo, NY and most of the snow has gone south of us here also. We're expecting more tomorrow. Temps are a little lower than usual, 20's most days. We're in the middle of a run of 10+ days of not getting to 32F, which is unusual for here, that's supposed to change next week.

It was 56º F here yesterday, and I felt like I was on vacation somewhere almost tropical. Tomorrow and Friday we're expecting 4-8 inches of snow, with temps in the 20s. I'm done with all of this. This is the first Winter since I've moved here that I've even needed to use my snow blower, and I have been so thankful to have it!

I keep eyeballing the long range forecast because I see low 40s and rain, which sound pretty good to me.

Stay safe, all of you!

Depending on where the rain/snow line falls, we're looking at either sleet or snow starting tonight and going until Friday. The Chesapeake Bay will create an interesting twist to just what we see here in Southern Maryland. Western Maryland is expected to get slammed again. But they usually do with these storms.

Seattle area reporting... Our place received ~9" to 10" (23 to 25cm) of snow this past weekend. Thankfully, most of it has already melted away. Rain and warmer temperatures blew in on the heels of three days of snowfall. Lots of power outages in the region but ours stayed on. The south end of Puget Sound got hit worse than us northerners though. I feel badly for them and especially for the people suffering in Texas at the moment.

Well, needless to say, the Florida Gulf Coast didn't get snow, but we've had nights down to 18 and 26. I hope everyone stays safe and warm.

I'm in north Mississippi, and we have ice, ice, baby! It looks so pretty, but it is solid ice, so we aren't going anywhere. The snow is just starting and will snow all night, I'm told. No issues with power, food, or even internet. School is virtual all week, so I am working from home. We've binged Netflix a lot and eaten lots! Honestly, no complaints here!

I'm a lot further north than any of you (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada), but we're going from -25 to -35C, (not counting wind chill) into a period of above-freezing temps, so maybe it will move down your way next.

Council Bluffs, Iowa. Bitter bitter cold for a week or better. Some times bad wind, sometimes not. It got up to 15...above!...today. A heat wave! No water or electric problems as far as I know.

I'm even further north than tardis, and it is warming up here. We've had several weeks of pretty cold weather (-30s overnight and highs of mid-20s), and the forecast is getting up to -11°C for tomorrow, and I think up to -2 Friday/Saturday. Feels like spring!

My sympathies to everyone is areas unprepared for cold and snow. I hope it warms up soon, and that you have power and heat.

Winter weather is fine if you are prepared, but potentially deadly if you aren't. Stay safe everyone!

Here in NJ things haven't been all that bad IMO, tho after the storm two weeks ago my I couldn't get my car out for three days. But that wasn't because of how much we had, but because of the lousy plowing that was done thru out the whole complex. This picture from my kitchen window that Tuesday morning shows the job they did. My car is a bit left of center. The snow between my car and where they plowed was 1-1.5 feet deep, and that pile along the edge of where it was plowed was about waist high.

Driving home this morning was a a bit of fun tho. It got up the upper 50'sF during the day yesterday, then was in the 20's overnight. So, everything that had melted froze making for a lot of icy spots on the roads.

We might get to one degree above freezing for possibly two hours later today -- first time in almost a week, but it'll be on the low 20s overnight. After that, it'll get into the high 30s tomorrow, and in the 50s and 60s (typical central Texas weather) as highs for the weekend.
Other than intermittent failures with one of my heat pumps, and it not being safe to drive anywhere (no matter what kind of a vehicle you've got), I've been quite lucky.
I've been working on writing a song--"Waiting for the Glacier to Recede"

We're in SE PA and are making up for the paucity of snow we had last year. We just got another 7 or 8" and it's still coming down just a little. This shot of Ms53 putting the finishing touches on our hiker snowperson is from Feb 7, and it's snowed at least a few inches a couple of times since then. But it's warm inside and we're not having any issues with power or water, and there's no urgent need to go anywhere in particular, so we're doing fine. I hope everyone else will be in good shape quickly.

Meanwhile in California we are still doing rain dances and hoping they are effective. Maybe we are doing them wrong? *checks manual to make sure the dance isn't for snow in southern areas*

My friend said her sister in Texas works at a hospital where all the water/sewage pipes are frozen. *shudder*

We hit 52°F (11°C) today! And there was so much sun. I'd say my yard now only has about 5% snow coverage. YAY!

Yeah really warm here, too, for a change. And more snow. So I went out for two days in a row. Here's yesterday and some tricky cloud shadows -

I was snowshoeing in deep snow and got so hot I took off coat, hat & gloves for a while. Just a shirt and snow pants and of course, boots. But it was so nice. The sun was so warm!!

>17 Bookmarque: Gorgeous!
I think I have missed my snowshoeing window this year. I can't use them when walking the dog without worrying about injuring her. (Or her stepping on the back of the shoe and injuring me.)

>17 Bookmarque: Neat!

We reached 62 yesterday. It was so nice I had to pull out the bicycle for the first time in 2021.

Can somebody please explain something to my simple, snow-free mind? "Snowshoes" brings to mind an image of a pair of objects looking like tennis rackets with minimal handles. So how do you walk without standing on your "other" snowshoe?

>21 hfglen: They have streamlined the shape a bit, but yeah... You can easily step on the back of the other shoe if you're not careful. (Or in my case my dog steps on the back of my shoe and I end up face first in the snow.)

Mine are similar to this but just gray & black. The bottom shoe is flipped over.

Your stance does need to change when you snowshoe - obviously wider and if the snow is deep, you need to lift your knees much higher than a regular walking stride. I did about 8 miles in 2 days and I'm a little sore in my calves and inside quads. Not bad, but noticeable. Shoes come in different styles depending on snow, weight, speed and terrain. Mine are for backcountry deep snow, walking only.
