And how to do that, by applying principles of the eastern practice of Taoism. Because only by loving yourself and being your best self, can you attract that kind of relationship that I assume most of us are looking for. A lot of what he was saying wasn't new information, but he presented it in such a way that was understandable, and personally, resonated with me. I'd say about half the book is devoted to that. Then, there is a section on how to meet a high-quality man, traits to look out for, and even a little section on where to meet them. The last section (and the shortest one) was about maintaining a happy relationship. Would highly recommend this book to any woman who's looking to better herself and is willing to make a change to get what she wants. I'll be keeping this one to refer to again in the future. The author makes a lot of good points about things that we can do in all of our relationships (e.g., learning to really listen, learning not to take things personally, going with the flow, practicing good judgment when it comes to who we let into our lives). I also appreciated the author's hat tip to Dr. John Gottman's Four Housemen and those specific "communication techniques" that many of us employ when we are wounded that do more harm than good (e.g., stonewalling and criticism). Much of this book would likely not be particularly useful for someone whose relationship/family structure or gender identity is not consistent with the mainstream/majority. That said, the author identifies his audience early on and I suspect that this book is actually quite powerful for those women who do fall into that limited category. Moreover, some of the book actually is universally applicable. I learned a lot from the book and I think that my own relationships are slowly, but surely, benefiting from those lessons.
