Ik ben weg van de heksen van Terry Pratchett en dus mocht deze eerste kennismaking met Granny Weatherwax natuurlijk niet ontbreken. In tegenstelling tot de latere boeken waarin ze haar opwachting maakt, is Granny nog redelijk mild tegenover haar medemensen, al doet ze haar uiterste best om het concept "headology" duidelijk te maken voor de leek, en ook voor de kleine heks euh tovenaar waar ze het voor opneemt. De kleine Esk is immers per vergissing uitgekozen door een tovenaar om zijn opvoger te zijn. In plaats van de achtste zoon van een achtste zoon, bleek de baby echter een dochter. Nooit gezien in de Discwereld en dat zorgt uiteraard voor hilarische toestanden. Niet het beste boek in de reeks maar toch: hoed af voor Pratchett. ( )

Dank aan Neil Gaiman, die ons het laatst overgebleven exemplaar uitleende van het Liber Paginarum Fulvarum, en een luid hallo daar voor al die jongelui uit de H.P. Lovecraft Vrolijke Vakantieclub.
Men dient goed te begrijpen dat dit geen halfgaar boek is. Alleen roodharige gansjes in jaren-vijtig komedies zijn halfgaar.
Nee, en geschift is het ook niet.

Onderweg leert Esk over het bestaan van seks, maar in het reisdoel zorgt haar sekse voor veel meer consternatie. Gelukkig kan Esk heel goed haar eigen boontjes doppen - vooral met de hulp van Opoe Wedersmeer en... mevoi Copsuf, de parel van de Gesloten Universiteit.
Voordat de Dood zijn knokige hand op zijn schouder legde moest tovenaar Stokkel Tromp nog even zijn staf doorgeven aan de achtste zoon van een achtste zoon. Tot schrik en verdriet van de macho wereld van de tovenarij zag hij een kleinigheid over het hoofd: het geslacht van de pasgeborene.
