Egyptologist, essayist and novelist, Christian Jacq is one of the most widely read authors in the world. Here, he presents a new vision of one of the pillars of Egyptian wisdom and the key to an era of rich spirituality which has much to offer. Ptah-Hotep was a philosopher and leading statesman in the Egypt of 2400 BC. Having reached the great age of 110 he decided to pass on his experience by setting down a collection of sayings, or 'wisdoms.' Miraculously preserved, his work has a real claim to be the oldest book in the world and offers not only wisdom but an exceptional insight into the life and philosophy of the ancient world. As second in command to the fifth-dynasty pharaoh Djedkare Isesi, Ptah-Hotep's work is crucial to our understanding of the golden age of the Ancient Empire (around 2640--2040 BC). Through this book we can see into the mind of the sage and share his most intimate reflections. Styled as advice from father to son or master to pupil, his words offer counsel on timeless topics such as the art of governing, the nature of true knowledge, and how to enjoy a harmonious life without violence.… (meer)

This is definitely one of the most interesting texts preserved from Ancient Egypt: a list of 36 exhortations from vizier Ptahhotep to his son, which he hopes will succeed him in the service of Pharaoh. The text is not really systematic, but it is a collection of positive and negative guidelines, both about simple rules of etiquette and general moral imperatives. Striking is the emphasis placed on self-control, reliability and modesty, while at the top of one of the most glorious civilizations in history you would expect assertiveness and even cocky behavior.
“If you are influential, you should establish respect for yourself
Through knowledge and through courtesy in speech.
Do not be domination / except in official matters,
For the aggressive man meets with trouble.
Don't be arrogant, lest you be brought low;
Do not be silent, but yet be cautious of causing offense
When you answer a speech angrily.”
Of course there are also guidelines that we would label as sexist in our Western modernity (early 21st century), such as the admonition to keep wives far from power and even subjugated; touching, on the other hand, is the instruction to respect the wife, even if she is frivolous. Well, you can laugh about this kind of thing, but it illustrates a certain way of looking at the world.

Currently the oldest textbook in human history written by the Vizier, priest, author and sage Ptahhotep while at the age of 110 years old. Written in the Afrikan Mdu Ntr language, the oldest writing system, the book is a set of instructions that were preserved on papyri. Even though written 2500 years before The Christ, the words and wisdom are timeless and priceless. ( )
