Biography & Autobiography. History. Nonfiction. During World War II, Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic social worker, organized a rescue network of fellow social workers to save 2,500 Jewish children from certain death in the Warsaw ghetto. Incredibly, after the war her heroism, like that of many others, was suppressed by communist Poland and remained virtually unknown for sixty years. Unknown, that is, until three high school girls from an economically depressed, rural school district in southeast Kansas stumbled upon a tantalizing reference to Sendler's rescues, which they fashioned into a history project, a play they called Life in a Jar. Their innocent drama was first seen in Kansas, then the Midwest, then New York, Los Angeles, Montreal, and finally Poland, where they elevated Irena Sendler to a national hero, championing her legacy of tolerance and respect for all people. Life in a Jar: The Irena Sendler Project is a Holocaust history and more. It is the inspirational story of Protestant students from Kansas, each called in her own complex way to the history of a Catholic woman who knocked on Jewish doors in the Warsaw ghetto and, in Sendler's own words, "tried to talk the mothers out of their children.".… (meer)

I'm a little torn on how to rate this, because it feels like I'm rating two different stories; the portion of the book directly relating to Irena Sendler is engrossing and decently well-written, but the surrounding sections set in Kansas were pretty unfocused and rambling. If I were to rate these as two separate stories, I would give the historical narrative 4 stars and the present-day sections 2.5 stars. Therefore, I will split the difference and give the whole book 3 stars. ( )

Life in a Jar is about Irene Sendler's (a Polish Catholic) and the Jews of the Warsaw ghetto and courage in the face of overwhelming odds and crushing oppression. It is about how that courage was almost lost to history but was rescued by an unlikely trio of Protestant kids from Kansas. If you are a fan of the Anne Franks book or Schlinder's List I would recommend this book highly to anyone 11 or older. ( )

A Polish social worker rescued 2500 Jewish children in the Warsaw ghetto. She was captured by the Gestapo, tortured and slated for a firing squad. However, she was rescued at the last minute by the Zegota. Irena kept records of what children she placed where and that jar where she kept the list survived. As many as could be found were reunited with the families. Sendler is one of the "Righteous of the Nations." 396 pages ( )

The inspirational story of Kansas Teens who are living examples of the power of one person to change the world

The content of this book was educational and important. It was inspirational to learn about Irena and her colleagues who saved Jewish children from the Holocaust. I also liked learning about the people in Kansas who worked so hard to bring this story to light. I was not pleased with the writing and was very surprised to learn that Michael Lowenthal, a gifted storyteller was thanked for his editing. ( )
