Following on the heels of The Nobody, his Vertigo graphic novel debut, writer/artist Jeff Lemire pens his very first ongoing series Sweet Tooth. A cross between Bambi and Cormac McCarthy's The Road, Sweet Tooth tells the story of Gus, a rare new breed of human/animal hybrid children, has been raised in isolation following an inexplicable pandemic that struck a decade earlier. Now, with the WHO of his father he's left to fend for himself . . . until he meets a hulking drifter named Jepperd who promises to help him. Jepperd and Gus set out on a post-apocalyptic journey into the devastated American landscape to find 'the Preserve" a refuge for hybrids. Gus reluctantly joins Jepperd on a missing persons hunt, but the tension between the two continues to grow. Meanwhile, Singh and Johnny come face to face with a deadly new threat, and Lucy and the girls meet Walter Fish, an enigmatic survivor who may have more to offer than meets the eye. Will this lead to a new sanctuary for them, or something far more dangerous?… (meer)

I'm not sure what's sadder, the contents of this graphic novel or the fact that in a few days I will have run out of volumes to read.

Once again, Lemire's writing is beautiful and haunting and the art is moody and sparse. I loved that the first chapter of this volume had its own distinctive tone -- you'll see what I mean if you decide to read it, I don't want to spoil it for you.

The water colourist did a particularly excellent job in this issue and I loved the color palette and the washes. It added a great texture and suited Gus' character really well.

I love that any of the volumes I read have their own distinctive style -- it means that the comics all stand together as cohesive pieces but they don't blend together like other comics sometimes do.

Thank you Jeff Lemire, for all you do, but if it's all the same to you, I'd like my heart back now please. ( )

This might be one of my favorite volumes yet. The first in any series always holds a special place in my heart, but this one is vying for second place. Lemire is seriously so talented, the other character's backstories and the change of art style to tell them is a perfect example of how to tell a story visually. Then there was the bear scene, which was riveting to say the least. As far as I'm concerned that was Jeppard's redemption right there it was raw and beautiful to me. If you're on the fence or you "keep hearing about" this series, just read it.

The bleakest, most gut wrenching graphic novel out there. ( )

I can't help but notice a great handful of parallels and influences from The Walking Dead. It only goes to show that this is definitely my kind of book. Jeff Lemire has crafted an excellent original story all his own that does such a great job of creating a compelling story, while still entertaining a comic reader with action and great panels. ( )
