I'll review this series as a whole rather than the individual books. While the first 2 books were a breeze, the last 3 were a bit more gloomy and repetitive. The heists are amazing; the stunts Eli pulls bedazzling. Unfortunately, they're barely a blip in the narrative. I kept looking forward to those handful of pages that described a heist or Eli's interaction with the spirits. The dialogue between Eli and the spirit world was mostly humorous and formed the high point of the series. However, most of that was overshadowed by the whole demon vs mankind story. The storyline, overall, is simple and not overly complicated. But for someone looking for an easy read or a stopgap between heavy literature, it works. One thing that grated a bit was the endless repetition. Even within a book, the author tends to harp upon the evils of certain characters over and over again. And the writing is a bit clunky in the first book, although it does seem to improve over the series. There's really no depth to the characters nor do they evolve. Be it, Joseph or Lyonette, Gin or even Eli, they're all pretty one-dimensional. Even the demon is as black as he is portrayed. The heroes and villains all stay strictly within their proscribed roles. But again, I think the author meant this to be a breeze of a read rather than something to delve into and ponder upon. The only character who was a bit multi-faceted was Sara, and I wish there was more of her in the story. Still, the series was not as bad as some I've read. Also, there's been a lot of comparison between this series with the Riyria Chronicles, but somehow, that worked much better for me. This remains my absolute favorite series of all time. Perfect pacing, wonderfully balanced, consistent character development, full of every emotion you can think of, nothing tedious to weight through before getting to the good parts--pretty much everything is "a good part". Every time I get disenchanted with books, I go back to re-read anything by Rachel Aaron because her writing is that inspiring. It's never a bore to read, and a whole lot of fun. A fun book about the best thief in the world (also a Wizard, his trick is to convince doors and locks etc to open for him) whose goal is to have the highest bounty ever put on his head just to prove how good he is. He has a surly swordsman sidekick, and a girl who is trying to suppress the demon (literally a demon) that possesses her. They come up against an earnest wizard who is trying to stop him bring the Wizarding world into disrepute, but she finds him easy to catch but very difficult to keep. Fairly lighthearted mostly with plenty of serious moments. This is an omnibus of the first three books. From the opening chapter of the first book of the omnibus, I expected more of a lighthearted romp. What I got was actually better - as the series goes on, the stakes get higher. By the third book, this was one of those stories where I'm constantly irritated at the POV shifts because I want to know what happens next - only to be completely caught up by the events going on in that other POV. I'll definitely be picking up the next book in the series. Um. After I get through more of the current to-read stacks. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

HTML:Eli Monpress is talented, charming, and a thief. And, he's out to make a name for himself in this omnibus edition of Rachel Aaron's "fast, furious, and let's not forget fun" (Tom Holt) fantasy trilogy. But not just any thief. He's the greatest thief of the age â?? and he's also a wizard. And with the help of his partners â?? a swordsman with the most powerful magic sword in the world but no magical ability of his own, and a demonseed who can step through shadows and punch through walls â?? he's going to put his plan into effect. The first step is to increase the size of the bounty on his head, so he'll need to steal some big things. But he'll start small for now. He'll just steal something that no one will miss â?? at least for a while. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Apart from The Spirit Eater, which I rated as four stars, I gave these books three stars each, hence my rating for the omnibus as a whole. ( )
