I'm a bit sad it's over, but I like how it ended. You don't always get happy endings. ( )

Thirteen
3.5 Stars

The narrative in this final installment is presented via the shifting perspectives of the various heroines in the series - Elena, Paige, Eve, Jamie, Hope and Savannah. Each provides closure for their respective storylines, but the sequences from Elena's point of view are the most compelling. This only reinforces the idea that this series would have been much better if the focus had remained on her rather than introducing so many other characters and plots.

Nevertheless, this particular book completes Savannah's arc as she comes to terms with her heritage and her powers. While there is some development for her character - she matures from the spoiled and bratty girl of the previous books to a young woman who takes responsibility and considers the consequences of her actions - there is still an irritating disconnect between the apparent strength of her powers and her actual ability to use them effectively.

The romance is also disappointing as Adam and Savannah never live up to their potential. Unfortunately, their relationship still reads more like bickering siblings than lovers. The one and only sex scene is glossed over so quickly it might never have happened at all.

All in all, despite the ups and downs of the series, the Women of the Otherworld has had its exciting and compelling moments, and this book does provide a satisfying conclusion overall. ( )

The exciting conclusion to the Women of the Otherworld series, the reader follows Savannah Levine on one final journey, where all the rules seem to be broken as she reunites with her mother temporarily on the mortal plane. Alternating perspectives briefly, readers get some final moments with their favourite women of the otherworld, as the characters stop a demon's master plan. This novel concludes the series, though it lives on in the Y.A. spin-offs, novellas and other short stories. ( )

This review definitely contains spoilers. Definitely contains rants as well.

So this book is a continuation of the last Savannah book, picking up right where it left off, with Savannah losing her powers. This may have been an interesting plot, but in this novel, it is a completely unneeded one. The story goes that she loses her powers so that she can learn to better assists and harness her power. The conclusion of this arc being that she banishes her grandfather (high-level demon) from a body. Which apparently requires a large amount of power, hence the harnessing and whatnot. But I think most people would agree that this is something that Savannah could have done prior to learning more about her powers. Which kinda makes the whole arc unnecessary, and leading the story to be even more complicated than it should be. Not to mention that whenever Savannah actually needed her powers, they were there.

Another thing that bothered me about this book is that Savannah could have done so much more when in difficult situations, but it was like the author forgot that it was possible. Have a friend dying from being caught-up in chaos visions, and she does nothing, doesn't even attempt a calming spell which probably would have worked in the situation. Stuck in a compound with no way to inform others about what is going on? Don't you have that communication spell to speak to others' minds? Might want to give that a try, even if the spell fails. Find a friend nearly dead? That healing spell might come in handy, if not to save him, at least to help. One might argue that Savannah was lacking the spellpower to accomplish these spells, but at least try. Don't go along as if part of the world you built-up doesn't exist.

My other issue isn't that much of a big one. But the author wrote quite a few times about how demons give no care for their children, much less their grandchildren. Yet this book had that in spades. Pretty sure no character in this book with a demon link had a parent (or grandparent) that didn't care.

So when you put all that aside, it wasn't necessarily a bad story. It just has a lot of flaws that made me annoyed while reading it.

This book goes out to al the readers of the Otherworld. For those who discovered it with Bitten a decade ago, to those who just discovered it a month ago. You took a dream and you made it real. Thank you.
