It was one of those I’m really curious how they managed a movie given the context of the book. I have to admit both the book and the movie is brilliant. This book is about a little boy named August that was born with a facial deformity. Despite it he is a regular boy that enjoys doing things that regular boys his age enjoy doing. He’s a sweet boy with a positive attitude given his circumstances. August is about to go through one of the biggest changes in his life. He’s about to start middle school at a real school. Up until this point in his life his mom has always home schooled him. He’s never been inside a real school aside from when his family went to school functions for his sister. He’s scared that no one will like him and that he’ll be made fun of by the other children in his class as well as the entire school. He has a very logical fear. It turns out not to be as bad as he’d thought at first. However, he does go through some rough spots throughout a majority of the book. The end result is for the reader to decide. I really enjoyed this book. It shows that even though you may be different that you can still do and accomplish all the same things that other kids your age are doing and more if you really really put your mind to it. This is a great book that tells the story of August Pullman, a kid with a genetic deformity. This is an emotional and thought provoking chapter book, and one would think that with such a deep book it would be harder to understand, however this is not the case as the author uses excellent use of simple words to convey complex messages. The author was actually inspired by their own kid’s reaction to seeing someone with a deformity, which I think adds a new layer of depth to the work.
