The Glass Castle meets Ball Four as Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey weaves searing honesty and baseball insight in this memoir about his unlikely journey to the big leagues.

An English Lit major at the University of Tennessee, Dickey is as articulate and thoughtful as any professional athlete in any sport-and proves it page after page, as he provides fresh and honest insight into baseball and a career unlike any other. Fourteen years ago, Dickey was a heralded No. 1 draft choice of the Texas Rangers, only to have an $810,000 signing bonus, and his lifelong dream, ripped away by an X- ray-and the discovery that he did not have an ulna collateral ligament in his right elbow. Five years ago, he gave up a record six home runs in three innings to the Detroit Tigers-and was effectively consigned to the baseball scrap heap.

Sustained by his profound Christian faith, the love of his wife and children, and a relentless quest for self-awareness and authenticity, the immensely likable Dickey details his transformation from a reckless, risk-taking loner to a grounded, life-affirming big leaguer. He emerged as one of the premier pitchers in the National League in 2010-and the knuckleballing embodiment of the wonders that perseverance and human wisdom can produce. Dickey views his story as one of redemption. Readers will come to see it as something more-a uniquely American story of beating back demons, listening to your heart, and overcoming extraordinary odds.

Doesn't feel like a typical athlete's book. It feels like he wrote it himself. Very honest and I found it and him compelling. We are on different planes with regard to religion, but I came away feeling that Mr. Dickey is a good man trying to be the best he can be in all aspects of his life. A great read for a fan of baseball in general, The New York Mets in particular and most of all; life. ( )

I love baseball and consequently have read a fair amount of baseball bios. For the most part they were about some of the most celebrated and well known stars of the game. What sets Dickey's bio apart is that he's spent most of his 15 years in baseball in the minor leagues. Dickey is no star, and so what the book comes to be about is perseverance. Despite all the odds stacked against him Dickey refuses to give up his dream of being an established major league pitcher.
This was a nice refreshing change of pace from the previous baseball bios I've read. Well done R.A. Keep it up, and Lets Go Mets ! ( )

R.A. has certainly led an interesting life, as chronicled by this book. A lot of it has been written about in the media already, the sexual abuse, finding a syringe in the locker room, and the abuse is definitely a central issue throughout the book. R.A. is a little heavy on the religion aspect, which doesn't jibe to well with me, but the book isn't about me, it's about him. Since religion is a big factor in his life, it also factors largely into the book. His book also has those little sidebars that I hate in other books, but didn't mind in this one, because in other books they fall into the middle of a chapter. His sidebars come after the chapter and last a page or too, definitely not as distracting as they are in the other books I have reported on.
All in all, he tells a good story, from his beginning, to top prospect status, to medical marvel, to journeyman, to the present. Definitely an enjoyable book and I think any baseball fan will find it as such. ( )

3.5 stars. What a story. No, this isn't a gorgeously written book, but the R.A.'s story of perseverance, faith, and learning what it means to live a life authentically makes it a great read. ( )

I am so impressed with this book. R.A. has a story worth telling but, even better, he tells it in a way that glorifies God and not himself - something incredibly rare from a professional athlete. R.A. tells a story of difficulty and abuse and sin and struggle and in the end you find yourself grateful to God and rooting for R.A. Thank you, R.A. for your transparency and for sharing your journey with us. God will use it to bring healing in many lives. ( )
