After her grandmother Arlette's death, Betty is finally ready to begin her life. She had forfeited university, parties, boyfriends, summer jobs-all the usual preoccupations of a woman her age-in order to care for Arlette. Now she's ready for whatever life throws at her, and, since the will included a beneficiary unknown to her who lives in the city, she heads there to find the mysterious woman... In 1920s London, Arlette is starting her new life in a time of postwar change. Beautiful and charismatic, she's drawn into a hedonistic world, but then tragedy strikes, and she flees back to her childhood home... When Betty's search leads her to a man-someone who meant the world to her grandmother-the secrets of Arlette's past may help Betty find her own way to happiness in the present... A rich detective story and a captivating look at London then and now, Before I Met You is an unforgettable novel about two very different women, separated by seventy years but united by big hearts and even bigger dreams.… (meer)

I enjoyed meeting Arlette and Betty in Lisa Jewell’s fantastic novel, Before I Met You. The story opens with Betty meeting her step grandmother, Arlette, for the first time when her mom and step dad move in to look after Arlette following an injury. The two become very close and Betty gives up the typical opportunities for young adults when Arlette experiences health complications related to a stroke. The two women live together in Arlette’s aging home until Arlette’s death.

During the reading of Arlette’s will, the family learns she has left a large portion of her inheritance to a woman named Clara Pickle, who presumably lives in London. Betty, ever so compassionate and selfless, jumps at the chance to move to London’s Soho in search of this mysterious woman. Facing the excitement of independence and an opportunity to live the life of a typical 22-year-old, Betty begins her new life by finding an apartment and a job in Soho.

The novel kept me on the edge of my seat as the story alternated between Betty’s life in 1995 and Arlette’s time in London in the early 1920’s. Arlette’s arrival in London and the time she spent with her swanky friends was fascinating. She met and became close friends with an artist who introduced her to more friends. The two years she lived in London were certainly life changing. Ironically, Betty’s life somewhat parallels her grandmother’s time in London. She meets unique people and is faced with important life changing decisions too, all while being a detective in search of Clara Pickle.

As I hoped, Lisa took me on an interesting journey of two different time periods with two very similar women. This novel is full of secrets, romantic relationships, curiosity, and life development. There are many moments of excitement and hope while also moments of sadness and devastation. The ending was very satisfying and left me feeling sad the story was over.

I purchased the audiobook of Before I Met You through my Audible subscription. A good narrator is an important component to the listening experience. Helen Duff did an excellent job making this a wonderful reading experience.

I have photos, videos, and additional information that I'm unable to include here. It can all be found on my blog, in the link below.

I found Betty and her story to be a bit frustrating, but Arlette's story kept me hooked ( )

This was my first Lisa Jewell novel. The one thing that saved it...is that I listened to the audiobook and loved the narrator....but still had to skip much of it to get to the end.....I hope her other books are better. ( )

This story features two timelines. A woman in the 1920's in London and one in modern-day London. I found the 1920's storyline fascinating, but the modern day one was a bit dull for me. Which man will she pick? (Meh!) ( )

I have enjoyed all of the Lisa Jewell novels that I have read so far, including this one - but it was not my favorite. I already know this author's style so I expected a slow build up, but this one took me even longer than usual to get into; and I felt the story was kind of weak. There was a dual timeline and I liked the story of the present (well, early 1990's) better. Betty Dean was a really likable main character, a young girl having a good time on her own for the first time in London.

I cared much less about the story of Arlett and her adventures in the roaring 20's. I thought that it was an odd decision by the author to have Arlett be Betty's "step-grandmother" instead of her real grandmother. It seemed an unnecessary detail that made Betty's determination to uncover her story less compelling.

In any case, Jewell comes up with a resolution that ties the two stories together in a way that, as is her trademark, is satisfying and bittersweet. ( )
