Narratively, this just wasn't as strong as [b:Little Brother|954674|Little Brother (Little Brother, #1)|Cory Doctorow|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1349673129s/954674.jpg|939584], nor were the lessons on "electronic hygiene" as good. Plus, the celebrity name-dropping was a little annoying; most of them appeared in the story for no good reason. Perhaps the only satisfying thing I got out of this was Doctorow's acknowledgement that even electing a "good-guy" president didn't change the course of the surveillance state we're building in America. But Little Brother is still a much better call to arms than is [b:Homeland|12917338|Homeland (Little Brother, #2)|Cory Doctorow|https://d202m5krfqbpi5.cloudfront.net/books/1340259004s/12917338.jpg|18072409]. ( ) I haven't had time to read a book for a long time. Homeland is a very nice way to pick up that habit again. And this idea of making his books public domain is quite interesting. You can go to https://craphound.com/, despite the funny name and 90's look, it is his real website. You can download his books there. No bullshit. His real books. Here's what he says in the preface for Homeland: "This being the 21st century, there is no way I can force you to pay for this book before reading it -- you can get pretty much any ebook on the Internet for free with no more difficulty than you'd undergo if you were to buy it through legit channels -- so I hope that by giving you this, and trusting you, that you will reward me by helping to support me and my publisher (whose contribution to this book can't be overstated)." Little Brother and Homeland are equally good in my opinion. Check them out! Oh, and, of course, I am read the book using the Text To Speech eVoice reader app I wrote myself :) If you're curious, it's free, have a look. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lenntt.evoicereader
Mr. Doctorow is bang up-to-date (as Orwell never was) on the uses of rapidly changing technology, both good and bad. If you want to keep up, there's a four-page appendix on how to protect your privacy and use the Net productively—so long as you're allowed, that is.
