Not sure what the problem was, but I couldn't get into this one. And that is weird because I love Jess Michaels. She is one of the Very Few adult historical writers I will read. Normally I love her books. They are always steamy, well written and definitely grab and hold your attention. This one, for some reason, didn't do that. I DNF'ed it around around 14%. I will try again in some time in the future. For now it stays in my graveyard. This series seems to be an education in what a mistress was at this time in history - not sure what period it is - mid 1800s? Whether the depiction of a mistress and their lot remotely resembles what's revealed in these books I have no idea, and would like to know! It's certainly an unusual role.
Their station in society is lowly and powerless, but the heroines here are determined and spirited and use their wits and charms to make the best of it. As usual, it seems to me that that is the main draw of the modern historical romance - the admirable and inspiring traits of the women. (
