La mitología siempre me ha gustado, en especial las sirenas, nunca leí nada sobre ellas, por lo que tenía unas ganas ENORMES de leer Waterfell, hay otras series de sirenas muy famosas, sólo que no he sentido esas ganas de leerlas. Sobre todo me ha dolido el no gustarme es porque la escritora me cae bien, hace unos meses me llegaron unos bookmarks muy bonitos.

¿Qué es lo que no me gustó del libro?

La protagonista, el insta love, la historia. Continué leyéndolo porque tenía la esperanza que en algún momento algunos de los personajes/amigos de Nerissa, la protagonista, la pusiera en su sitio. Nunca pasó. Entiendo que ella sea la próxima monarca y esté en peligro y quiera su vida, pero hay un nivel de egoísmo en los libros que aguanto, eso también tiene que ver en como un escritor nos presenta las situaciones para gustar de ellos, lamentablemente las escenas del libro en dónde supuestamente debemos sentirnos conectados con Nerissa, entender sus decisiones y egoísmo, lo único que hizo fue agrandar mi desagrado por ella. Es curioso porque por lo general tiendo a gustar de personajes un poco egoístas, por ejemplo la protagonista de Heartbeat fue acusada de eso y amé el libro, o en "La dulce venganza de Celia Door" dónde sí, Celia es bastante egocéntrica pero a mí el libro me pareció bastante simpático. Así que no es exactamente mi "odio" por este tipo de personaje.

Luego viene el insta love lo poco gustable que fue Nerissa: Cuando digo insta-love, me refiero AL INSTALOVE, como en el primer capítulo, casi primera página, se conocen y caen enamorados. Lo, el chico nuevo y misterioso, obviamente, con sus ojos azules que no son azules, es todo lo que ella quiere pero no debe, y créanme que repite eso una cantidad bastante grande. No me creí para nada este amorío, sobre todo porque es muy fácil detectar por dónde va la historia por lo que para mí no hubo sorpresa alguna.

Mi problema ha sido completamente con Nerissa, solo no. Hay personajes que amas odiar y otros que solo no quieres pensar en ellos.

¿Algo positivo?

Sí. El reino acuático no era exactamente lo que esperaba, si bien la Nerissa como personaje no me gustó, lo qué es, su especie se me hizo muy interesante, hay algunas inconsistencias, pero no fue lo que esperaba. Y el otro fue el twist de los malos malotes.

Conclusión - ¿Recomiendo el libro a alguien? Depende. Por ejemplo si amaste con pasión y locura la serie Inmortales de Alyson Nöel, quizá te guste. Aunque no es garantizado.

Nerissa was sent to the human world from Waterfell, deep in the Mariana Trench, to learn about humans. Her people, the Aquarathi, have always done this, so she hides her true form and pretends to be human. While she's there, her father, the King, is murdered, and she makes the rash decision to never return to Waterfell. But as she nears adulthood she's challenged by the minor ruler who killed her father and who wants to kill Nerissa in order to rule the Aquarathi as their high queen.

But those aren't Nerissa's only problems. She's falling in love with a human boy, mean girl Cara hates her, foster brother Speio wants to go home, and best friend Jenna might be in danger for learning too much about Nerissa and the Aquarathi.

Some of this book was predictable. Of course Lo was Aquarathi. The foreshadowing was really not subtle, no matter how many times we were told Nerissa would sense any Aquarathi around her. And of course he was the son of her enemy. Because who else could he be? How else could that knife be twisted? But his explanation of why he hid his identity made sense, and the way Rissa and Lo dealt with it by taking time away from one another made sense, too.

One thing I really liked was the relationship between Rissa and Jenna. Their relationship as best friends was the most fleshed out and most important in this book. The love story honestly took a back seat to this, more important, friendship. They give each other more time, more energy, and more love than they give others. Not that their boyfriends weren't important to them, but that they were very important to each other. It was so great to read a female friendship like this.

I have one minor nitpick. When Aquarathi bond they experience physical changes by way of markings on their bodies. The color of those markings are dependent upon the person with whom they bonded. So if Nerissa's mother bonded with Ehmora and had her markings; Nerissa's mother and father did not bond but only pretended to; how could they have faked that bond since her father had no markings? And if he did have markings, then who did he bond with? That's been bugging me ever since I read about Rissa and Lo's markings.

Waterfell failed to capture my attention. There were times when I was reading that I'd space out and skim pages because nothing held my attention. I barely felt anything for these characters, which was a shame because I think they, and this book, could've been really good if the author had tried just a bit harder.

I seem to be disappointed with a lot of books pertaining to the mermaid mythology. Most of the ones I read are cheesy. Ugh, good mermaid books, where are you?! ( )

The Aquarathi are of the most evolved aquatic mammal in the ocean…I think they’re mammal. They are also one of the most intelligent, or at least I assume so because they had technology advanced enough to migrate to Earth thousands of years ago in search of a new water based home. Yet with that intelligence they don’t seem to realize that monarchies tend to fail miserably.

Nerissa Marin is next in line to rule the Golden court as queen. As royal customs she is sent to live among “peasants” (my quotations) and learn about human culture in order to learn from our mistakes. She’s made quite the life for herself, becoming the star of her school’s hockey team, mild popularity in school, and charming the principal so it’s no surprise she’s not that excited to go back home where she’ll have to face her father’s murderer. With her father dead there’s no one next in line to take the throne and she’s the only one who can stop the evil Ursula type character Ehmora from thanking the throne.

Where to start? Where. To. Start.

Oh I know! Let’s talk about Nerissa’s ~~super sexy mega fox hot dreamy~~ enemy then crush then friend then lover Lo or “Lotharius” Seaven or Seaver I don’t even care. WHO NAMES THEIR KID SOMETHING LIKE LOTHARIUS? OH I KNOW! alert, maybe a royal queen of some sort does because all royals have to have terrible names like Tyrion, Cersei, Sansa or Prince George. I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Ehmora likes to be mean to her own kids too This romance was poop.

Not to say that the rest of the novel wasn’t interesting. I really thought this was going to be a mermaid novel but NOPE it’s more about Aliens….for the most part. Nerissa spent a good portion of a chapter explaining to her best friend Jenna about the evolution of her species and how they came to Earth in flying saucers (I’m only half kidding). The coolness of the Aquarathi is what kept me coming back. Oh and not to mention the only plot twist that I totally did not see coming who’d have thunk the real Queen B-I-T-SEE-ACHE was Nerissa’s lesbian mom Neriah? [PS I hate her name too]

I know realize that I mentioned so many bad things about the novel but it was actually pretty good. Next time I think the author needs to find a good balance between the romance and the actual big arc that should be taking priority over the half-ased romance (yes I misspelt that). ( )

Fell in love with the cover on this one… absolutely loved the shades of blue. Unfortunately for me, I'd somehow managed to mix it up with AQUIFER, and was expecting a post-apocalyptic drought-fest. This made the mermaid love and angst a bit of a shock as no… the two books have absolutely nothing in common with each other. WATERFELL is a very pleasant YA romance with some gorgeous world building (my mermaid lore is pretty much limited to Disney, the Little Mermaid, and Captain Jack Sparrow), but the heroine did read young to me and rather angsty.
