Normal guy Frank Potter is forced by his wife to join a local acting group. He enters a terrifying world of hefty thespians, impromptu drama, and crazy people. Mayhem and ambulances ensue. A large Russian woman also falls on top of someone from a great height. In another even more harrowing tale, Frank wants a quiet Thanksgiving, but his dreaded sister-in-law and her French film director husband visit from Beverly Hills. Hilarity occurs, followed by shocking violence, gophers and narrow escapes. In yet another startling story, Frank decides to build a swimming pool in his backyard. Mayhem ensues, followed by more mayhem and Apache Indians. Some people (who remain anonymous) claim this book is similar to Gone With the Wind, but without the South, Scarlet O'Hara, mint juleps, or anything else that happened in that book. Others say they just want a nice ham and cheese sandwich. And others, of course, will arrive for dinner on Tuesday.Lovers and Lunatics will have an enormous impact on your life, causing you to either give up your career of violent crime or to move to Peru, where you will encounter a mysterious clown named Manolo. Luscious, billowy, and bittersweetly hot, this book is destined to speak to you in deep, sonorous ways, sort of like how a blue whale would speak to you if it could speak English and could dial a cellphone, way down under the ocean, without electrocuting itself due to how water and batteries interact. This is assuming, of course, that the blue whale wants to speak with you. And he does.… (meer)

A collection of short stories revolving around the Potter Family, lighthearted comical reading, I enjoyed one more than the others but overall worth the read. ( )

I recieved this in exchange for a review.

It was well written and funny in parts. It was a few stories but I think i would have preferred a longer novelized version. ( )

Lovers and Lunatics is a short story collection about the Potters; in fact, subtitle for the book is the Potter Family Files, Volume 1, so maybe we will get more than one collection of stories. Anyway, this collection of stories is crazy. The humor is over the top and you question whether the husband is the lunatic of the title versus the people he meets in the stories.

The first story is about how Frank and his wife join an acting group even though Frank does n't want to join it. However, Frank decides that once he sees the level of craziness in the group, he wants to act in the play purely so that he can witness the train wreck of the play.

The next story is about Frank's bonus, which is usually just a gift certificate to some weird kind of Pizza joint. This time the bonus is money, a lot of money. After talking with the family, they decide to get a swimming pool. So, Frank talks to his next door neighbor about the project and he suggests to hire Mexicans because they don't have follow the laws or something like that. So, you can guess something goes wrong with the project.

The last story is about Frank's in-laws coming over for Thanksgiving dinner. Of course, we are introduced to the husband and wife who both appear to be as certifiable as the rest of the Potters.

If you want a really good laugh, you can't go wrong with The Potters! ( )

I received this book to read and review from Library Thing. In this book, the author presents three outrageous stories about Frank Potter. In one, he is forced to join a local acting group with disastrous and hilarious results. In another, Frank Potter tries to put a swimming pool in his backyard the cheap way, without the benefit of a licenses contractor and any local permits. In the last story, Frank Potter and his family are ready for a great Thanksgiving holiday until his brother-in-law and her husband arrive for a visit bringing new meaning to the idea that holidays are made for friends and family to get together to enjoy a feast and each other. These stories are funny, but they do go to extremes, and stretch way beyond what anyone could ever believe or find reasonable behavior (which led me to wonder what I was doing reading this sort of thing—enjoying myself or wasting time). Still, the author, I think, meant them to tickle the reader’s funny bone. Frank Potter’s world is definitely a strange one, but he manages, along with his family, to get through things regardless how they occur. I think this book is enjoyable, as long as the reader knows up front that the situations and how they are handled border on the extreme/ridiculous. A good break from life’s trials and tribulations. I received this book for free in exchange for providing an honest review.
In Lovers and Lunatics the main character Frank Potter, shares his life experiences. Frank husband and father of three has an unique and interesting life that he shares with the readers. There were times that I laughed until I cried. I enjoyed this book and was sorry to see it end. Since this was volume one, I can only hope that the are many volumes to follow. I highly recommend this book but suggest you not read it in a public place. Your laughter might draw stares. ( )
