Hoofdpersoon in deze serie is Israel Armstrong, een schlemielige vegetarisch joodse bibliothecaris uit Noord-Londen die in een Noord-Iers dorp werkt als bibliothecaris op de bibliobus. Het dorp, Tumdrum wordt bevolkt door een aantal prettig gestoorde bewoners. In deel 1 is de collectie van de bibliobus verdwenen maar wordt Israel wel geacht de boeken terug te vinden en de dienstverlening voort te zetten. In deel 2 verdwijnt Mr Dixon, eigenaar van de grootste lokale winkel met een grote som geld net op het moment dat Israel met z’n bibliobus voor de deur staat om een tentoonstelling over de firma in de bibliobus in te richten. Hij wordt verdacht van kidnapping en diefstal en ziet zich genoodzaakt om zijn goede naam te zuiveren, waarbij het zeker helpt om bibliothecaris zijn.
