Excellent read from start to the very last word. ( ) I don't usually read fast paced action thrillers. I feel they tend to skimp on character devolvement in favor of keeping the action going non stop. There are two main characters in this novel and in the case of the hero Dryden, that's pretty much the case. We know his type right from the very beginning, and his character doesn't develop at all. But Rachel, now she's a mystery and it's only slowly that we get to know who, and what she is. On her part, excellent character development. Adding non stop, fast paced action as well, makes for a a pretty good combination. This book is aptly named as that is mostly what Sam Dryden does throughout the whole book - run. Sam is an ex-Special Forces and Black ops veteran, who has been living on the coast of southern California. Sam has suffered great personal loss which occurred about six years before this book begins, and has not attempted to return to the land of the living and human feeling yet when, during a dark moonless night when he is running on a bridge, a young girl bumps into him. She too is running, but she is running from unimaginable horror. Sam decides to protect this girl, and that sets him on a dangerous and unknown course where he is tasked to use his considerable black ops skills to keep him and Rachel alive. The book switches from one terror to another, and the bad guys keep changing. Nothing is as it seems, and nothing is simple. Sam doesn't know who to trust or where to turn. This is a high octane thriller that leaves you gasping until the end of the book. With a little bit of science fiction that doesn't seem that far off from the possible, the book is fast-paced and frantic from start to finish. It's been awhile since I've read a suspense thriller as heart-pounding as this one. It got a little over-the-top for me near the end, so that is why the 4 stars instead of the 5 stars I was giving it in my mind up until then. I should mention that I listened to it on audiobook, and found this an excellent way to to bring the suspense and tension up throughout. Recommended for lovers of high octane suspense thrillers.—
In Dryden, Lee has created a hero who is skilled, believable and human at the same time, while Rachel comes across as sympathetic and genuine. The action is nonstop and takes place at breakneck speed with no downtime. Lee’s writing is smooth and uncontrived, and with this book, he enters the ranks of the best action-thriller writers, all of whom got that way by eschewing coincidence, instead making both characters and readers work through every roadblock while searching for any advantage that can be had. Readers who pick up Lee’s latest should be prepared to miss their favorite television shows, since they won’t put this book down long enough to watch them. "Sam Dryden, retired special forces, lives a quiet life in a small town on the coast of Southern California. While out on a run in the middle of the night, a young girl runs into him on the seaside boardwalk. Barefoot and terrified, she's running from a group of heavily armed men with one clear goal--to kill the fleeing child. After Dryden helps her evade her pursuers, he learns that the eleven year old, for as long as she can remember, has been kept in a secret prison by forces within the government. But she doesn't know much beyond her own name, Rachel. She only remembers the past two months of her life--and that she has a skill that makes her very dangerous to these men and the hidden men in charge. Dryden, who lost his wife and young daughter in an accident five years ago, agrees to help her try to unravel her own past and make sense of it, to protect her from the people who are moving heaven and earth to find them both. Although Dryden is only one man, he's a man with the extraordinary skills and experience--as a Ranger, a Delta, and five years doing off-the-book black ops with an elite team. But, as he slowly begins to discover, the highly trained paramilitary forces on their heels is the only part of the danger they must face. Will Rachel's own unremembered past be the most deadly of them all?"-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
