"When Molly Wizenberg married Brandon Pettit, she vowed always to support him, to work with him to make their hopes and dreams real. She evinced enthusiasm about Brandon's enthusiasms: building a violin, building a boat, and opening an ice cream store--none of which came to pass. So when Brandon started making plans to open a pizza restaurant, Molly felt sure that the restaurant would join the list of Brandon's abandoned projects. When she finally realized that Delancey really was going to happen, that Brandon was going to change all of her assumptions about what their married life would be like, it was too late. She faced the first crisis in their young marriage. Opening a restaurant is not like hosting a dinner party every night. Molly and Brandon's budget was small, and the tasks at hand were often overhwelming. They had to find a space they could afford, gut renovate it themselves, find second-hand furniture and equipment, build what furniture they couldn't find, buy and install a wood-burning oven, pass health inspections, hire staff, and establish a billing and payroll system. They lost a financial partner. Their cook disappeared the day they opened. Still, their restaurant was a success, and Molly managed to convince herself that she was happy in their new life. Until Halloween night, when she was forced to admit she could no longer pretend. While Delancey is a funny and frank look at behind-the-scenes restaurant life, it is also a bravely honest and moving portrait of a tender young marriage and two partners who had to find out how to let each other go in order to come together"--… (meer)

I think I'm somewhere between a 2 and a 3 on this.

It was a nice book that I found totally readable and mildly interesting but it was not great and not a book I'd go out of my way to suggest to someone else. It felt almost like a very long magazine article. It made me want to go eat their pizza but I didn't feel like I learned very much about anything at all and just had the briefest glimpse at everything that went into building the restaurant but not enough to make me feel invested in any of the people or the outcomes.

Still, it's not a bad book. There is nothing about it that irritated me or made me want to stop reading. As the Goodreads 2 star rating actually says "it was OK" so I'm sticking with that. I got this from Amazon on one of their daily deals and it was certainly worth the $1.99 I paid for it but I'm not sure it would be worth full price.

The included recipes might be the best part of the whole thing. ( )

This was not quite enough to hold my attention. I decided I'd rather check out Molly's blog, and hoo-boy that is *way* more interesting. ( )

This is a nonfiction account of a married couple that opened a pizza place together in Seattle. The book is an exhausting, but realistic depiction of the challenges they faced. I understand the frustrations that come out of such an endeavor, but it was like reading Debbie Downer's account of being married to a chef. It wasn't one that was enjoyable or even made me want to try the food. A few random recipes are included as well. ( )

Another fabulous memoir from Molly Wizenberg. I love her writing, I love her honesty (even the painful parts), I love her humor and I love her lyrical descriptions of food. The best part about this book may be the way in which it invites me to explore more of the local food scene -- but I particularly like that this is not a book by a snob, about the kind of food one can hardly ever afford. It also gave me much more insight into the kinds of crazy sacrifices people make to run a restaurant, and more appreciation for the love that entails. ( )

Nice book about opening a restaurant in Seattle... the author is more than willing to share that not everything is going according to plan and some days she just wants to quit! ( )

It may be that when we no longer know what to do, we have come to our real work, and when we no longer know which way to go, we have begun our real journey.  The mind that is not baffled is not employed.  The impeded stream is one that sings.  --WENDELL BERRY
