"Software millionaire Joe Tesla is set to ring the bell on Wall Street the morning his company goes public. On what should be the brightest day in his life, he is instead struck with severe agoraphobia. The sudden dread of the outside is so debilitating, he can't leave his hotel at Grand Central Terminal, except to go underground. Bad luck for Joe, because in the tunnels lurk corpses and murderers, an underground Victorian mansion and a mysterious bricked-up 1940s presidential train car. Joe and his service dog, Edison, find themselves pursued by villains and police alike, their only salvation now is to unearth the mystery that started it all, a deadly, contagious madness on the brink of escaping The World Beneath." -- Amazon.com.… (meer)

Enjoyed this chapter a day serial read from Nook so much that I ordered book 2 and 3 in the series. A great premise with an agoraphobic and his dog living in the tunnels under New York City! ( )

This book was amazing. The author does an impeccable job of crafting such a mysteriously lovable character, Joe Tesla. You won't be disappointed! ( )

Great plot idea and unique characters! This is the kind of book that draws you in and won't let you go. Joe Tesla is quirky and irritating and yet his hyper-agoraphobia becomes endearing as the story progresses. The background of Grand Central Station, NYC Subway and the subterranean world under NYC are the perfect venues for dark intrigue, mystery, and fast-paced action. I found myself rooting for Edison as much as Joe! If you like a good mystery, set aside a full day to enjoy this clever, imaginative, caffeine-fueled rush! After reading "The World Beneath" you'll never be the same riding the NYC Subway... ( )

I have read Cantrell's collaborations with James Rollins and enjoyed them very much. This novel is one her own and is a great read - fast paced,& action filled with a very unusual and quirky lead character. I look forward to reading the other two novels in this series & hopefully have the background of Joe Tesla fleshed out a bit more. ( )

The World Beneath by Rebecca Cantrell: Software millionaire Joe Tesla’s life changed suddenly when he became terrified of being outdoors. Therefore he moved into a large underground Victorian mansion that had been built inside the New York City subway system. Now he and his service dog Edison use the tunnels of the NYC underground to exercise and to visit restaurants, stores, gyms and other destinations that are accessible through the tunnels. It’s a fascinating premise and Cantrell weaves a terrific story around it. Tesla accidentally witnesses a murder in one of the subway tunnels while exercising with his dog. Unfortunately he is blamed for the murder and he (and Edison) become embroiled in a complex conspiracy that puts them in a terrifying struggle to survive. I liked this action thriller very much. ( )
