Let me start by saying that though I read a pretty fair amount of historical romance, I have never been particularly attracted to the Indian/White Woman thing. I get too wrapped up in the backstory, and always find it hard to suspend disbelief that in a society where Native Americans were stripped of their lands and dehumanized by European Americans and European Americans were taught to live in fear of Native Americans, real uncomplicated love could blossom. This book did a pretty darn good job of getting me past that issue. The heroine is smart and has skills that are valued by the Blackfeet and not taken seriously but the White townspeople because she is a woman. The hero is conflicted about Whites and persecuted by the townspeople who attack everything/everyone he loves. There is discussion of the mistreatment of the Blackfeet, and the heroine is asked, why would you want to go to them, not because the Blackfeet are bad, but because you know you will be victimized by the government and driven to unproductive land where you will be left to starve. Bottom line: I did not have to suspend disbelief because my questions were addressed. The hero and heroine are really good well drawn characters as are most of the supporting characters. (The villains are cardboard cutouts, but it turned out to not be too annoying.) Overall, a good read ( ) geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
