Splendid for young readers desiring to know the history of Louisiana. I found this in the library of the middle school I taught at and the librarian said the Louisiana history teacher uses it sometimes. Richard Worth portrays Colonial Louisiana in a realistic and intriguing manner. He does not sugarcoat the harsh life of colonial Louisiana. He discusses how New Orleans used to flood frequently and "alligators and poisonous snakes sometimes swan in the streets through smelly garbage that collected there." I can image students being grossed out, yet ready to hear more.

The book is a very simple read, probably for 6th and 7th graders. I recommend it to young readers and teachers who want to discuss life in Louisiana before statehood.
