American Ballet Theater soloist Misty Copeland encourages a young ballet student, with brown skin like her own, by telling her that she, too, had to learn basic steps and how to be graceful when she was starting out, and that some day, with practice and dedication, the little girl will become a firebird, too. This book touches on the idea that everyone has a start and can do big things when they put their mind to it. It is written about the author, Misty Copeland, a well-known ballerina. This book could be a great addition to a classroom library and help students to see themselves represented within the classroom. It could also pair well with a lesson on biographical non-fiction to show that biographies could be written in different ways.

This book is about a dancer, who is not very confident, and through her hard work and dedication becomes an amazing dancer. I think that this book could be a great read aloud to help show kids that they should follow their dreams and if they work hard, they can do anything. I think this would be a great book for elementary age students.

Goodreads Review:
In her debut picture book, Misty Copeland tells the story of a young girl--an every girl--whose confidence is fragile and who is questioning her own ability to reach the heights that Misty has reached. Misty encourages this young girl's faith in herself and shows her exactly how, through hard work and dedication, she too can become Firebird.

Lyrical and affecting text paired with bold, striking illustrations that are some of Caldecott Honoree Christopher Myers's best work, makes Firebird perfect for aspiring ballerinas everywhere. (less)

The story is about a girl who is hesitant about her dancing abilities. Throughout the book there is more confidence and an optimistic outlook about king all to perform ballet. I would recommend this book because it has a theme of not being discouraged and that one can accomplish something they pursue. The book also has beautiful and bright images. This is a great book for 2nd graders and below to read. ( )

I think this book would be great for primary level students. It has gorgeous art and minimal text. We see this book to be about a young girl who wants to be a ballerina. This book highlights an African American centered role, and how she pushes hard to make her dreams come true. She eventually becomes a professional ballet dancer. I think this would be a good book to have on the shelf to have more diversity and inclusivity, as well as beautiful art and encourage dancing/following your dreams. ( )
