Interesting ideas about how what one looks like doesn't represent the "inner beauty" of a person at all, and how people react to what they see as marred perfection, or imperfection. Especially in the sense that scars, in that case, seem to render someone as "not whole," as in the person is no longer complete, possibly no longer even as intelligent. I like the concept of a mental meeting of minds as more important, possibly, than physical attraction; or, rather, that a mental meeting of minds adds to physical attraction and makes superficial appearances unimportant. (  ) waclements7 | Jan 10, 2016 | Kiss of Lies is a a compelling story of two emotionally and physically scarred people who come together under unusual circumstances and while fighting to overcome the damage caused to each of them by Regency society's rigid rules and expectations explore a deep passion that leads to an enduring love which helps each to heal the other's hidden scars. Whew -a long sentence I know but I hope it captures the deep emotions running through this book. The characters were vivid and their pain and passion came through strongly. The suffering the heroine endured really helped to focus on the degree even the women in the upper level of the Polite Society were helpless to the will of their fathers and husbands. The hero despite having solid friends was also easily victimized under the manipulation of the ton's elite. The story kept throwing twists which kept my attention riveted while I was rooting for this couple to find peace together (along with the hero's ward). I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good historical romance with a strong helping of spicy passion. I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. (  ) Myrt | Jan 28, 2014 | I liked Christian almost immediately and warmed to Sarah, but the supporting characters are what really kept me turning the pages or tapping on my kindle screen. I adore little Lily. She’s sweet, funny and strong. How Christian was with Lily, his reassurances and tries at comfort, is what really made me start to like him. I also liked the other Libertine Scholars. I would love to know more about them, especially Arend, Maitland, and even the absent Grayson. Where is he? I have a feeling that his story (and Lady Portia’s) will be coming soon. However, I think it’s a bad sign when I find the supporting characters more compelling the main hero and heroine. As the book progressed I found myself caring less and less about Christian and Sarah. It seemed to start after he found out her true identity. It’s strange. I’m usually a sucker for the scarred/wounded hero, but I didn’t really love this book. For around the first half of the book I was thinking this would be a 4 star book. It dropped as it went on. The author’s apparent love of the exclamation point also started to annoy me. Overall, I’m not going to automatically buy the rest of the series (Sebastian is next up to the plate), but I’ll be checking the plot synopses and may order them.
