I liked this story, raising animals is rewarding and sometimes sad. This is a good book for preparing your children for some of the sad realities of caring for farm animals. ( ) The nurturing nature of this book truly appeals to me. Because of Sonya's love and care, her baby chicks grew up and started hatching their own eggs. As any mother would, she took good care of them. I really appreciated the family's diverse makeup. (You don't typically see that in books that don't address issues of race or family.) Sonya becomes aware of the food chain as a result of the incident. Although a fact of life, it makes this novel more suitable for older children as opposed to young children. Some of the kindergarten students I taught would have been unhappy after reading this book. (Not all of the delicate ones, but some.) Sonya cares for the three chicks her father brings home, but one night a fox gets into the coop and takes one of the hens. "When Sonya had exhausted herself with crying," in her papa's lap, he tells her a story from the fox's point of view. The next day, the family repairs the coop, and later, one of Sonya's hen's eggs hatches and she has a new chick. Sonya has her father's brown skin and dark hair and her mother's freckles; her younger sibling resembles her, minus the freckles. Wahl handles the topic of death with sensitivity and care; it is part of nature and she does not shy away from it, but offers comfort in ritual, and proof that life goes on. Her watercolor, collage, and colored pencil illustrations are vibrant and natural, full of earthy browns and forest greens. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Sonya raises her three chickens from the time they are tiny chicks. She feeds them, shelters them and loves them. Everywhere Sonya goes, her chicks are peeping at her heels. Under her care, the chicks grow into hens and even give Sonya a wonderful gift: an egg! One night, Sonya hears noises coming from the chicken coop and discovers that one of her hens has disappeared. Where did the hen go? What happened to her? When Sonya discovers the answers, she learns some important truths about the interconnectedness of nature and the true joys and sorrows of caring for another creature.
