I basically picked this up because someone on youtube mentioned it even though their other recommendations were not up my alley and boy oh boy I'm glad I did. The world and magic of it are excellent. This was a great adventure - Suri and Minna are my forever cinnamon rolls and I am here for them. Persephone is a bad bitch and Raithe is ok - he comes across a little dull for me despite his skills. I was into Nyphron but I'm second guessing myself after finishin it. Malcolm is a wonderful rock bludgeonor. I don't know how I feel about Arion yet - she seems a bit aloof and above emotion. Poor Maeve. And Konniger, Gryndal and that duo of dicks, the King and Prince of Fhrey, can suck it. I'm excited for the next one. Michael J. Sullivan is a gifted storyteller! For those of us who have read his Riyria series, we of course already know this. But this author is no one-trick wonder. Age of Myth is the first book of Michael J. Sullivan's newest series, the Legends of the First Empire. Set 3000 years before the timeline of Riyria Revelations, the series aspires to set the record straight and tell the truth behind the myths shrouding the First Empire's creation. This story was wonderful. The pacing, action, plot reveals, setting and context, the characters - all fabulous. For want of a better word, there is something 'friendly' about the author's style that is satisfying and heartwarming. And, best of all, we are left with questions for the next instalments to answer. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

HTML: Michael J. Sullivan's trailblazing career began with the breakout success of his Riyria series: full-bodied, spellbinding fantasy adventures whose imaginative scope and sympathetic characters won a devoted readership and comparisons to fantasy masters Brandon Sanderson, Scott Lynch, and Tolkien himself. Now, Sullivan's stunning hardcover debut, Age of Myth, inaugurates an original five-book seriesâ??and one of fantasy's finest next-generation storytellers continues to break new ground. Since time immemorial, humans have worshipped the gods they call Fhrey, truly a race apart: invincible in battle, masters of magic, and seemingly immortal. But when a god falls to a human blade, the balance of power between men and those they thought were gods changes forever. Now, only a few stand between humankind and annihilation: Raithe, reluctant to embrace his destiny as the God Killer. Suri, a young seer burdened by signs of impending doom. And Persephone, who must overcome personal tragedy to lead her people. The Age of Myth is over; the time of rebellion has begun. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

This was a really well done epic fantasy novel, with a variety of interesting and likeable characters. The women, in particular, were quite strong -- which I definitely appreciated. I also liked the humour sprinkled throughout, and the bits of snarky, on-point dialogue. They provided the perfect counterpoint to the dark world-building and gruesome situations the characters often encountered. ( )
