Summary
This informational book talks about water. It talks about water in its three states: liquid, solid, and gas. It talks about how each state is transformed into another state. It illustrates how water looks in each state. It gives readers an idea when we see each state naturally in the world. It also talks about the uses of water.
Reaction
This book brings physical change to an elementary child’s level. Photographs emphasize each state of water. This book would be great to use during science class about physical versus chemical changes. It would also be great during a science lecture on water or matter. It is neat to see how the author uses terminology that children can understand. I also like how there is a short glossary at the back to define new terms that students may be unfamiliar with. Information with photographs make the book more easily understood by a younger audience.
Extension
1. Have children do experiments with water with different components such as salt, oil, and plain water to see which freezes first.
2. Have children watch water boil to see how water becomes a gas in form of steam.
3. Have children look up where water is found in three different states on the Earth.
4. Have children look up additional uses for water.
5. Have children look up bodies of water on the earth and tell classmates how many lakes, rivers, oceans, and other forms of water there are on the earth.
6. I would have my class identify water in its different forms by looking at photographs. ( )
