This collection of 240 photographs documents 224 of the 20th century's top studio craft artists, makers working in fiber, clay, glass, metal, and wood. The photographs are by Paul J. Smith, Director Emeritus of the Museum of Arts and Design. Drawing on Smith's career of over fifty years as an arts administrator and curator, this book documents his extensive interest in meeting artists in their studios, as well as at conferences and national and international events. By reflecting his firsthand experience of the changing currents in 20th-century craft, this book is a uniquely personal record that captures an important aspect of the history of the studio craft movement. These images, taken over a thirty-year period, record and portray details of 224 artists. Collectively the photographs illustrate makers who have much in common and who are part of a community that share friendships, interests, and a belief in the importance of the handmade object. AUTHOR: Paul J. Smith, Director Emeritus of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, is a preeminent authority on twentieth-century craft and design. After first joining the staff of the American Craftsmen's Council (ACC) in 1957, he served as director of its museum from 1963 to 1987. In addition to organizing more than 200 exhibitions during his directorial tenure, he has been involved in numerous influential craft and design exhibitions and projects in both the United States and abroad. Smith has also been an active trustee and consultant for many cultural organizations throughout the country; currently, he serves on the boards of the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation and the Lenore G. Tawney Foundation. 52 colour and 380 b/w photographs… (meer)
