I’ve been wanting to read the murderbot series for a while but never knew these books were so short- I saw them in my library recently and decided to just go for it and practically read it in one go. It had humour and an interesting storyline, I loved how you don’t know what the plan is and have to find out as time goes on. I hope the second book can live upto this one’s expectations XD ( ) Yeah, I don't know. After all the praise, this novella left me unimpressed. After an excitement start, the whole story kind of just moves in slow motion, which left me confused about what the story in general was supposed to be. It wasn't a thriller, because there was not really a case, after they ran into the bad guys, story over. It wasn't space exploration because all the stuff that would go for it was left out, maybe because Murderbot was not involved in it and therefore didn't care to report it, who knows. It was neither a character study, as for that the character stayed too bland. I like the idea of Murderbot, as I like grumpy characters in general, and I will give the follow up book a go before I make my final decision, but overall, this was just meh. Short but entertaining story. I was reminded of the Expanse with the scifi angles and the "working with a team" aspect. The audiobook starts off a little hard to follow, but once I got used to the reader I enjoyed their style. I already started the 2nd book. 4 augmented appendages out of 5 augmented appendages.
But this book is sneaky. As much as you want to think this is just some lightweight little confection made of robot fights and space murder — and as much as All Systems Red wants to present itself as nothing but robot fights and space murder — Martha Wells did something really clever. She hid a delicate, nuanced and deeply, grumpily human story inside these pulp trappings, by making her murderous robot story primarily character-driven. And the character doing the driving? A murderous android discovers itself in "All Systems Red", a tense science fiction adventure by Martha Wells that interrogates the roots of consciousness through Artificial intelligence. In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied 'droid -- a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as "Murderbot." Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
