I was reminded of the Expanse with the scifi angles and the "working with a team" aspect. The audiobook starts off a little hard to follow, but once I got used to the reader I enjoyed their style. I already started the 2nd book. 4 augmented appendages out of 5 augmented appendages. ( ) Based on the title and cover one would hardly expect “All Systems Red” to be about a socially anxious security robot who spends hundreds of hours watching soap operas behind its helmet. This book would be a great read for sci-fi fans and also people who don't tend to read many tech-heavy stories (which is me). The world-building is good and easy to pick up and Wells balances action-packed sci-fi with humor and heart making this a delightful novella which can be read in one sitting (it’s only 150 pages!). 1st read: 2nd read: February 2024 I love Murderbot. And the sci-fi setting is awesome. ******************** Original review: This novella is short and sweet. The story and most of the characters are kept pretty simple, but they're still interesting. Murderbot is the star of this book and I'm excited to read more about it! This was a sweet and diverting scifi novella. I liked it but wasn't swept away. I would say it was a 3.5, and I wrestled with whether to round up or down. I do plan to continue the series. I believe my friend Justin might now consider me a puppy murderer for my failure to award all the stars, but I am here to assure him no animals were harmed in the reading or reviewing process.
But this book is sneaky. As much as you want to think this is just some lightweight little confection made of robot fights and space murder — and as much as All Systems Red wants to present itself as nothing but robot fights and space murder — Martha Wells did something really clever. She hid a delicate, nuanced and deeply, grumpily human story inside these pulp trappings, by making her murderous robot story primarily character-driven. And the character doing the driving? A murderous android discovers itself in "All Systems Red", a tense science fiction adventure by Martha Wells that interrogates the roots of consciousness through Artificial intelligence. In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn't a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied 'droid -- a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as "Murderbot." Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is. But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
