I liked this version of the story! ( )

This book is about a blacksmith's daughter named Lorelei who is very clumsy. She is always hurting herself. When things couldn't get worse her mother dies and her father has to go away for a while to work. Lorelei is old enough to be alone, but she would get hurt often. Her father hires a sitter named Trudy. Trudy is so annoyed by Lorelei that she plans to kill her. One day they went in the forest for a picnic and Trudy "gets lost" so Lorelei is left alone. She finds the palace of a Prince named Nicholas who likes her. Prince Nicholas is finding someone to marry, but they have to take a special test to see if they can find a true princess. Will Lorelei be the one? :) ( )

This is a great book. I love it. The book is about a grown girl, Lorelei, who cannot take care of herself in the slightest bit. Additionally, ever since she was a baby she has had to have the best things, as if she were a princess, even though she was not. Lorelei's mother dies and her father refuses to get married, but has to go on his annual trip; therefore he hires a keeper for his daughter. Towards the end of the book a prince the daughter has met is looking for a princess. Even though Lorelei is not a princess he still loves her; however she has to pass a princess test given by his parents, which includes snooty things only a true princess would know. ( )

This is a pretty retelling of the story of the Princess and the Pea. It explained something that bothered me about the original, how the delicate girl survived childhood without her parents strangling her.

I ordered this after reading Ella Enchanted, and I was sorry to find out it is really a short story rather than a novel - but it was an enjoyable read all the same. ( )

This is a retelling of the Princess and the Pea. Lorelei is accident prone and sickly. She is constantly getting a rash or getting hurt. Her housekeeper is sick of taking care of her, so she thinks of ways to kill her. The housekeeper left Lorelei in the forest. Lorelei finds her way to the castle just in time for the princess test that the king and queen were administering to find their son a bride. Lorelei passes all of the tests and she got to marry prince Nickolaus.

My personal Reaction -

I liked the story. It was a short chapter book, and the story flowed well. Since it is a love story about a princess, I assume girls would like it better than boys.

Classroom Extension Ideas -

- I would use this as a small group book in a 4th grade classroom. After the group is done reading the book I could have a list of questions ready for them to answer or a webquest to solve.

- I would read this book aloud to a 2nd grade class, along with viewing the movie of the Princess and the Pea. We can compare and contrast the two. ( )
