Het boek beschrijft de eerste twintig jaar van de twintigste eeuw, jaren waarin ook in Rusland de politieke en maatschappelijk verhoudingen grondig veranderden. De tucht van de autocratische machtsstructuur veranderde gaandeweg in de terreur van de communistische heilstaat.
Over dat “gaandeweg” valt overigens veel te zeggen. Het was niet zo dat de kritiek op het Tsaristisch bewind erg fundamenteel van aard was. Het was veel meer de twijfel over de houding van het hof ten opzichte van Duitsland.
Raspoetin was pro Duits en Tsarina Alexandra was telg uit een Duits geslacht.
Zou Tsaar Nicolaas wat begripvoller zijn geweest en de tijdgeest wat meer ruimte had geboden, dat had die ontwikkeling zomaar geleid kunnen hebben tot een constitutionele monarchie (met of zonder een Romanov). De geesten waren er rijp voor.
En die ontwikkeling is in de loop van de beschreven twintig jaar steeds als ‘tegenstem’ hoorbaar. Niet verwonderlijk wanneer men zich realiseert dat in die jaren wetgeving heeft bestaan waarin burgerlijke vrijheden en mensenrechten een zekere constitutionele verankering vonden, zoals afschaffing van de doodstraf, recht van vrije meningsuiting en vrijheid van geloof etc.etc.
Het is allemaal anders gelopen. Het boek doet daar uitgebreid verslag van. Door bedrog, verraad en duistere financiële allianties met Duitsland werden de sovjets in staat gesteld om door middel van terreur hun heilstaat te vestigen. Miljoenen waren het slachtoffer, en toen moest Stalin nog aan de macht komen !
Nieuwe bronnen of niet, de conclusie blijft hetzelfde: het kwaad overwon opnieuw. ( )
