In this important new book, leading international artists Damien Hirst, David Salle and Jenny Saville have created works for the Bilotti chapel in Rome, by drawing inspiration from different religious themes. This newly built chapel continues the tradition of artists creating artwork for religious spaces following in the footsteps of Michelangelo (Sistine Chapel), Matisse and Rothko. Damien Hirst finds inspiration in the Gospels, `The Four Evangelists', and continues his preoccupation with life and death. Within the canvases, butterflies, crucifixes and pills allude to society's obsession with immortality, belief and corruption. David Salle contrasts the truth of the Holy Scriptures with the truth and falsity of news reports. In his work the Great Flood compares to New Orleans, the creation is juxtaposed with modern science and technology. Redemption is the theme by Jenny Saville. The experience of pain and suffering of the body, she interprets as a journey to spirituality. She challenges the prejudice that physical handicaps and illnesses are seen as atonement to sin.
