Eighteen-year-old Julianne De Marchi is different. As in: she has an electrical undercurrent beneath her skin that stings and surges like a live wire. She can use it--to spark a fire, maybe even end a life--but she doesn't understand what it is. And she can barely control it, especially when she's anxious. Ryan Walsh was on track for a stellar football career when his knee blew out. Now he's a soldier--part of an experimental privatised military unit that has identified Jules De Marchi as a threat. Is it because of the weird undercurrent she's tried so hard to hide? Or because of her mother Angie's history as an activist against bio-engineering and big business? It's no coincidence that Ryan and Jules are in the same place at the same time--he's under orders to follow her, after all. But then an explosive attack on a city building by an unknown enemy throws them together in the most violent and unexpected way. (Publisher's website)… (meer)

On the front cover of my copy of "The Undercurrent" was a sticker that read 'Guaranteed Great Read or Your Money Back'. Sadly, it wasn't a great read. It was an okay read, but there were times when it dragged and became bogged down, especially when the focus was on Angie, Juliette's mother and also the former leader of the Agitators. I found her parts far less interesting that Jules' who was struggling to control the electricity that was humming just belong the surface of her skin, and I found myself skimming them which is never a good sign.

"The Undercurrent" started with a bang but with so many characters and subplots involving military secrets, large corporations, activists, bio-technology and human experimentation, it was difficult to follow at times. However, there were enough twists and turns to keep me guessing who could be trusted.

I found myself rolling my eyes when Jules rescued her mother near the end. I had a feeling of dread when I guessed what might happen, but I kept telling myself, surely not. But no, it did happen and I was left sharing my head. I mean . . . really!!!???? It was just too convenient and trite to even be taken seriously. Overall, an interesting concept, but a fairly mediocre plot. ( )
