It was difficult to read this book. Such a strange combination of progressivism (a lesbian couple wholeheartedly accepted and celebrated by a very conservative community) and pervasive racism and colorism. Even the characters who, in my opinion, weren’t meant to be portrayed as racist were so, so, so racist (notably Ninny Threadgoode). ( ) I found this book a mixed bag. Some of it was sweet, some sentimental, but that didn't bother me. What did bother me was all the jumping around of chapters. Back and forth and all over the place as to time and place. It made me a little seasick! Trying to keep track of all that was a nuisance and at one point I realized she had made a mistake in the date because she followed a very short entry that was headed The Forever Slim Lodge, Montecito, California, December 5, 1986, with the subsequent entry that was said in the text to be some later, the character having waited until the following spring, and was headed Whistle Stop, Alabama, April 8, 1986. If you tried to make sense of the dates, it only drove you (or at least me) nuts. It was not great but a fun read, in spite of some annoyance.
