Micky Bellsong heeft geen doel in haar leven: ze drinkt te veel, ze heeft geen werk, en met mannen is ze ook niet op haar best. Dan ontmoet ze Leilani Klonk; een hyperintelligente, praatzieke en lichamelijk gehandicapte negenjarige.
Leilani vertelt Micky over haar leven. Haar moeder is een junk en meestal buiten zinnen. Haar stiefvader Preston Maddoc, een UFO-fanaticus, wordt verdacht van meerdere moorden. In een visioen heeft hij gezien dat Leilani, net als haar broertje Lukipela, op haar tiende verjaardag door buitenaardse wezens zal worden genezen.
