Stevie Bell has been accepted at the famous private school Ellingham Academy, established by an eccentric millionaire in the 1930s. Stevie arrives with plans of starting on the path of becoming a murder investigator and she plans to start with the cold case of the kidnapping and murders that happened on the Ellingham estate in 1936. But as Stevie begins to dig into the case, another death on campus pulls her into a separate investigation that will have much larger repercussions. I'm usually a big Maureen Johnson but this book didn't quite work for me. The mystery is really well constructed and told in parallel timelines between Stevie at the school in the present and the events of the kidnapping and murders in 1936. I particularly enjoyed the 1930s narrative but I had a rough time with the contemporary story with Stevie. I just had a hard time connecting with Stevie's character, which left me feeling pretty distant from the novel in general. The book ends on a cliffhanger but the distance was enough that I don't care enough to find out what happened next and won't be reading the rest of the series. Takes a bit to give in to the sort of ridiculous setting, but it does get going in the second half. The problem with the love interest is that he's not at all interesting. I believe Stevie is into him, but when they have their romcom low moment, I didn't care that he was mad at her and was annoyed that she moped about it. Is Leo supposed to be gay? There's nail polish, and at one point he calls himself a friend of Dorothy (he's referring to Dorothy Parker, not Oz), which (probably) would've been anachronistic. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

HTML: New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson weaves a delicate tale of murder and mystery in the first book of a striking new series, perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and E. Lockhart. Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the brightest thinkers, inventors, and artists. It was founded by Albert Ellingham, an early twentieth century tycoon, who wanted to make a wonderful place full of riddles, twisting pathways, and gardens. "A place," he said, "where learning is a game." Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym "Truly, Devious." It became one of the great unsolved crimes of American history. True-crime aficionado Stevie Bell is set to begin her first year at Ellingham Academy, and she has an ambitious plan: She will solve this cold case. That is, she will solve the case when she gets a grip on her demanding new school life and her housemates: the inventor, the novelist, the actor, the artist, and the jokester. But something strange is happening. Truly Devious makes a surprise return, and death revisits Ellingham Academy. The past has crawled out of its grave. Someone has gotten away with murder. The two interwoven mysteries of this first book in the Truly Devious series dovetail brilliantly, and Stevie Bell will continue her relentless quest for the murderers in books two and three. I’ve always enjoyed Maureen Johnson’s books, and this one didn’t disappoint. Stevie, the main character, is dynamic and interesting, and I was invested in her story from the first paragraph. The mystery was great, and it ended with a plot twist that I did NOT see coming. ( )
