They are called Bourgeois and their patronymic is also a way of life. They are eight brothers and two sisters, born in Paris between 1920 and 1940. Postulat de départ très intéressant, consistant à regarder le vécu des générations successives d'une famille, à la lumière du contexte historique et social de leur époque. A la longue on peut cependant se lasser et s'agacer de ce tableau détaillé à l'extrême de la vie de cette famille de grands bourgeois catholiques, au sein de laquelle finalement, - quoiqu'il en soit de l'évolution de la société autour d'eux, - on ne perçoit que d'infimes changements, à la marge. Ce roman sur une famille française est un prétexte pour revisiter l'histoire de la France au 20 ème siècle. Au travers de cette famille Bourgeois, 10 enfants, des convictions nationales et chrétiennes, nous revivons la deuxième guerre mondiale, celle d'Indochine et d'Algérie, les modes de vie de l'époque, la condition de la femme, la place de la religion dans les familles bourgeoises, la vie d'une famille nombreuses. Plus un récit, une réflexion sur notre société qu'un roman à proprement dit, ce livre est passionnant pour celui qui souhaite avoir une vue d'ensemble sur la France de 1919 à aujourd'hui. ( )
