Batman's team of vigilantes has ghosts in their pasts. And now they have come to roost. When Batman formed a team of fellow vigilantes to help him combat evil in Gotham City, he did it partially to protect his allies from the enemies targeting them. But being on a team makes for more targets, and sometimes the ghosts of your past can become everyone's problem. Azrael was raised to be the perfect assassin by the mysterious Order of St. Dumas...before he rebelled. But when the Order decides to create a more perfect assassin, Azrael and the entire team find themselves in the crosshairs of the deadly A.I. known as Ascalon. This kind of magic and mysticism was part of Bruce Wayne's training when he became Batman. And to save his friends, Bruce will seek the most powerful magical artifact that ever existed. The God Machine can give its bearer any knowledge, answer any question...but in the hands of the World's Greatest Detective, could it be even more dangerous than Ascalon? Continuing the critically acclaimed new direction spinning out of DC Rebirth, from writer James Tynion IV (DARK DAYS: THE FORGE) and artist Alvaro Martinez (BATMAN AND ROBIN ETERNAL).… (meer)

This focuses very much on Azrael and his struggles. I really enjoyed this new focus and I'm liking this version of the team.
Plenty of action and some background for Bruce.
Good artwork.
A great series so far. ( )

Batman: Detective Comics (Rebirth) Vol. 4: Deus Ex Machina by James Tynion IV (Illustrated by Alvaro Martinez) continues the story centering around Batman training a team to fight with. This graphic novel collects Detective Comics #957-962.

Batman finds out that with more people on his team, there are more targets opportunities for his enemies. Together with Azrael, a former assassin, the team finds themselves as targets for a deadly artificial intelligence known as Ascalon.

In order to fight Ascalon, Bruce Wayne joins with Zatanna to find The God Machine. In their adventures they encounter Ra’s al Ghul and Azrael.

Batman: Detective Comics (Rebirth) Vol. 4: Deus Ex Machina by James Tynion, IV (Illustrated by Alvaro Martinez) is a solid book of the Detective Comics series. Batman (Bruce Wayne) teams up with Zatanna, the magician, and the reader gets to view a bit of their history.

This graphic novel has two parallel story-lines, one dealing with Zatanna, the other with Azrael (Jean Paul). As one can see, this book was big on magic and the occult which frankly worked and I thought was an interesting addition to the Rebirth series.

The art in this graphic novel was strong, I enjoyed it (not as much as the artist enjoyed working on Zatanna), and it certainly enhanced the story and did not distract. This is the first graphic novel which in found Zatanna interesting and would not be against seeing more of this incarnation in future DC books.

This is another solid edition to the series. I find that every time I open one of these issues I’m afraid it’s going to ruin the series.
Sadly this is from past experience.

Not the Rebirth series though. Every issue is strong and addictive. ( )

Crap. Azrael and his baggage. In the pre-New 52 stuff I didn't really love the story lines with Azrael in them (and then him as Batman either). But, I liked this one a bit more. And there were some other cool story lines in the TPB as well. I definitely liked the one with Zatanna and her father (and a weird globe).

There was also some Batman/Zatanna stuff that hinted at such a rich backstory and I'd love to see more of that in the Bat Universe for sure (or does Justice League Dark still exist?)

And then finally the story with Spoiler doing her best to totally, well, spoil Batman as well as the bad guy's days was okay too.

I received this book via Netgalley thanks to DC Entertainment. ( )
