Dat zal veel mensen geen aantrekkelijke baan lijken, maar hij is Keiko op het lijf geschreven. Het wordt niet met zoveel woorden gezegd, maar Keiko lijkt autistisch. Ze neemt hetgeen mensen zeggen heel letterlijk, wat af en toe tot hilarische (zij het ook wat zwartgallige) scenes leidt. Waarom doet haar zus bijvoorbeeld zoveel moeite om de baby stil te krijgen, als je ook een mes hebt liggen waarmee je het geschreeuw veel sneller kan stoppen? De ongeschreven regels begrijpen is moeilijk voor haar, dus het bevalt haar juist heel goed dat een werkdag in de supermarkt zo voorspelbaar is en dat er scripts zijn om te volgen.
Voor Keiko is er dus geen probleem, maar voor haar omgeving des te meer. Waarom trouwt zij niet, en krijgt zij geen kinderen net als iedereen? Waarom neemt zij genoegen met een studentenbaantje? Heeft zij geen ambitie? De druk van haar omgeving neemt toe en dat brengt haar tot een paar opmerkelijke keuzes.
De Japanse schrijfster Sayaka Murata (1979) baseerde dit boek op haar eigen ervaringen als medewerker van een buurtsuper. Maar dit boek is meer dan een vermakelijk blikje in de dagelijkse routine van een Japanse supermarkt of in het leven van een autistische vrouw. Het snijdt ook grotere thema’s aan, zoals de maatschappelijke druk om ‘normaal’ te zijn, of om je aan te passen aan de grote gemene deler. En hoe het is om af te wijken vanwege een aandoening, een voorkeur of bijvoorbeeld je aseksualiteit. Dat is hier in Nederland misschien al niet altijd makkelijk, maar in Japan nog heel veel moeilijker.
Mooie thema’s dus, en een heel vermakelijk en goed leesbaar verhaal. Tegelijk vond ik de uitwerking hier en daar wel erg oppervlakkig. Het is dan ook een dun boekje van nog geen 150 pagina’s en eigenlijk meer een lang kort verhaal dan een roman met goed uitgewerkte personages en een gedetailleerd plot. Jammer, want ik vond Keiko een mooi karakter. Had best wat meer over haar willen lezen, en vooral ook willen weten hoe het nu verder gaat! (
